YOUR SEMESTER PROJECT IMAGINE THAT DURING THIS SEMESTER YOU GRADUATE FROM UWF WITH A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN YOUR DISCIPLINE (nursing, psychology, etc.); YOU FIND A DREAM JOB IN YOUR FIELD; AND YOUR MAJOR ASSIGNMENT IS TO PRODUCE A PAMPHLET TO HELP SOMEONE WITH AN ALCOHOL/DRUG PROBLEM IN YOUR CLIENT POPULATION (AN OB nurse and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or A COUNSELOR AND A CLIENT WITH ALCOHOL ABUSE AND BIPOLAR DISORDER). WHAT DO YOU DO? LOOK AT YOUR LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Find, access, and evaluate alcohol/drug information available using library databases and the Internet. 2. Utilize critical thinking in the application of legal and scholarly data to drugs of use and abuse as portrayed in news, magazine articles, journals, and films. 3. Locate, discuss, and evaluate individuals, community agencies, organizations, and treatment programs for referral in health maintenance, health promotion, and/or prevention of alcohol and drug use/abuse. 4. Create an alcohol/drug health maintenance, health promotion, or prevention pamphlet. PREPARATION 1. Contact Circulation Librarian for assistance with access if necessary. 2. Complete library Plagiarism Tutorial to assist in understanding the ethical use of information. 3. Complete library Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines Tutorial to assist in identifying different types of relevant information. PAPER 1 You will locate and summarize popular and scholarly articles on your identified client problem including legal and scholarly information. PAPER 2 MIDTERM The student will locate relevant articles from suggested library periodical databases and apply information in evaluating selected film. PAPER 3 The student will be able to locate and attend an open meeting of a support group that focuses on identified client’s problem OR will locate and interview a professional that deals with the type of problem your identified client has. You will discuss and evaluate the organization, and/or treatment focus/program with supporting information from scholarly journals.
