Description: Awards are made to two graduate students in English (literature and/or creative
writing) whose work “gives creative expression to women’s lives.” Winners are selected on the
basis of a project proposal and a writing sample.
English Department Travel Grants

Description: The grants can be used for travel by M.A. and Ph.D. students who are presenting a

Samuel Holt Monk Prize for the Best Article by a Graduate Student
Scribe for Human Rights Fellowship

Description: The fellowship supports one M.F.A. student who serves as a writer-in-residence
with the Human Rights Program. The Scribe learns the issues and meets the players involved in
the Program’s human rights work, then uses this experience to write an article for publication for
a large audience.

James Wright Prize in Poetry

Description: Sponsored by the American Academy of Poets and judged by a Twin Cities poet,
the award goes to a graduate or undergraduate student in English for a series of three poems.

CLA Fellowships for Research/Travel

Description: CLA Research/Travel Fellowships encourage graduate students in the Creative
Writing Program to spend the summer researching and or/ traveling for work and writing related

Luce Scholars Program

Description: Fifteen to eighteen young Americans of outstanding promise and high leadership
ability are sent each year to Asia for professional apprenticeships under the guidance of leading
Asians. Internships and job placements are arranged for each Scholar on the basis of individual
career interests, experience, training, and general background. (No academic credit is involved.)
Applicants must be U.S. citizens no more than twenty-nine years of age by July 1 of the year
they enter the program, and they must have earned at least a Bachelor's degree by that date. They
may be currently enrolled students in any college at the University of Minnesota, recent
graduates, or junior faculty. Applicants who have a major in Asian studies, or who have spent
more than twelve weeks in Asia, are ineligible.

Thesis Research Travel Grant

Description: This award supports thesis research outside of the applicant’s area of residence.
Applicant must be registered in a Ph.D. or D.M.A. program at the University of

Fulbright Program

Deadline: Notification of Intent to Apply in 2015 is due on August 10, 2015. The Fulbright
application is due on September 2, 2015.
Description: The purpose of the Fulbright program is to increase mutual understanding between
people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and
skills. Approximately 1,900 Grants are available to over 140 countries. The award includes
monthly stipends based on living costs in the host country, supplemental health and accident
insurance, and book and research allowances. Round-trip transportation is also provided.
Students pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Minnesota must apply through the
Graduate School Fellowship Office.

Fulbright-Clinton Fellowships

Description: Fulbright-Clinton Fellowship provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to serve in
professional placements in a foreign government ministry or institution in partner governments.
Fulbright-Clinton Fellows build mutual understanding and contribute to strengthening the public

Social Science Research Council Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship

Amount: The DPDF program covers all travel, lodging, and meals expenses related to mandatory
attendance at both workshops. Applicants may request up to $5,000 to support summer research
expenses, including travel, lodging, meals, and some necessary equipment and supplies.

Description: The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program helps earlystage doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences formulate innovative dissertation
research proposals through workshops, exploratory summer research, and writing guided by peer
review and faculty mentorship. The program seeks young scholars who are interested in
strengthening their dissertation research plans through exposure to the theories, literatures,
methods, and intellectual traditions of disciplines outside their own. By the end of the fellowship,
participating students will complete a draft proposal that can be reviewed with academic advisors
and adapted for submission to an academic department and/or research funding agencies.

Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship
Amount: $22,500
Duration: one year

Description: The Office for Diversity in Graduate Education (ODGE) administers the DOVE
Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded to approximately 20 first-year students from
underrepresented groups (U.S. citizens or permanent residents). The fellowship provides a
$22,500 stipend, tuition at regular graduate school rates (up to 14 credits per semester), and
subsidized health insurance for one academic year. Graduate programs must nominate
prospective students by 8:00 A.M., Monday, February 2, 2015. Students who wish to be
nominated must contact the Director of Graduate Studies in advance. The recipients of the
DOVE Fellowship are encouraged to participate in the Community of Scholars Program (COSP).

Description: This national competition is open to graduate students with outstanding character
and ability, who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen field of study, and
who demonstrate substantial educational debt. Students must be enrolled at the University of

Thomas H. Shevlin Fellowship

Description: For graduate students in the biological and agricultural sciences, basic physical and
medical sciences, and liberal arts. $23,000 for the academic year, plus tuition and subsidized

Description: Two nine-month residential fellowships are available for scholars working in the
humanities or social sciences. Scholars with doctorates who plan to write their books and PhD
candidates who plan to write their dissertations are eligible. Fellows receive a stipend ($40,000
for doctoral level scholars and $30,000 for PhD candidates) in addition to housing and office

Grad Student Research Internships
Description: As part of the University's effort to broaden career options and research experiences
for graduate students, the Graduate School is launching a pilot program to support summer
research-based internship opportunities in 2015. The purpose of the pilot is to expand the
network of partners in industry, non-profit, and government sectors offering internships, and to
encourage students who might not otherwise consider an internship to explore this possibility.
Successful applicants will be awarded a summer stipend of up to $4,000 from the Graduate
School, and provided health insurance coverage (if not already covered by the University) for
