Summer of Surrealism for Schools and Colleges
at St Mary’s in the Castle, Hastings
Farley Arts Trust enables students of all ages to access the remarkable heritage of Farley Farm House, Chiddingly,
East Sussex, known as the ‘Home of the Surrealists’. From 1949 it was the home of Roland Penrose the artist and his
wife Lee Miller the internationally acclaimed photographer. It was also a meeting place for their famous artist
friends such as Picasso and Miro and other great surrealists including Max Ernst, Man Ray and the poet, Paul Eluard.

Workshops
2 hour workshops: approx 10 – 12.00 and/or 12.30 – 14.30. 15 max per group. 2 different workshops available
simultaneously (see below), enabling 30 students to attend at any time. Each workshop: £75.00 Dates negotiable.
Workshop themes, available at Key Stage 2, 3, 4 or 5:
1. Surreal approaches in art: collage, drawing, photomontage, exquisite corpse, frottage
it's about spontaneity and playfulness (and humour!)
it's about putting together found objects and images and harnessing chance in the creative process
it's about collaboration and 'happenings' - amongst groups across different art forms.
2. Surreal approaches in words and drama
its about connecting the photographs in the exhibition with Lee Miller, her extraordinary life and careers
its about performances techniques and terminology (Freeze frame, improvisation, devising, story, physicality
its about exploring how surrealism could be used when developing performance
