WMO WORKSHOP ON THE IMPACT OF VARIOUS OBSERVING SYSTEMS ON NWP
(Submitted by Erik ANDERSSON, ECMWF, and Yoshiaki SATO, Japan; co-rapporteurs on
scientific evaluation of impact studies undertaken by NWP Centres)
Summary and Purpose of Document
Plans and initial preparations for the organization of the Fifth Workshop
on the Impact of Various Observing Systems on NWP are presented.
ACTION PROPOSED
The meeting is invited to note the information contained in this document for
discussion under the appropriate agenda items, and to recommend to CBS-Ext. 10
that funding be allocated for the organization of the Workshop.

WMO WORKSHOP ON THE IMPACT OF VARIOUS OBSERVING SYSTEMS ON NWP
1.
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Since 1997, a comprehensive review of the impact of the different operational observing
systems has been carried out through regular WMO workshops exploiting mainly results from
OSEs and OSSEs (Geneva:1997; Toulouse: 2000; Alpbach: 2004, Geneva 2008). At the
beginning these results were mainly the ones obtained by large-scale global models which were
operational in the main NWP centres. More recently, at least since Alpbach (2004), more and
more results have appeared from meso-scale models and on meso-scale observing systems.
1.2
The WMO Executive Council expressed appreciation for the co-sponsorship of the Fourth
WMO Workshop on The Impact of Various Observing Systems on NWP Forecasts by THORPEX
and the role that THORPEX research had played in guiding the development of the Global
Observing System. It urged stronger linkages with CBS on their activities related to optimizing the
future Global Observing System and requested that CBS and the THORPEX Working Group on
Data Assimilation and Observing Systems (DAOS) jointly organize the Fifth Workshop on the
Impact of Various Observing Systems on the NWP to be held in 2012.
1.3
The first steps towards the organisation of the Fifth workshop have been taken. Allocation
of appropriate funding will be requested at the CBS-Ext.(2010).
2.
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
Dr. Erik Andersson (ECMWF) has been nominated by ET-EGOS as chairman of the
organizing committee. Other members of the committee include John Eyre (Met Office), Yoshiako
Sato (JMA, to be confirmed), Lars-Peter Riishojgard (NOAA/JCSDA), Carla Cardinali (ECMWF)
and Florence Rabier (Meteo-France). Ms Cardinali and Ms Rabier also represent the THORPEX
DAOS.
3.
DATE, PLACE AND PERIOD
As noted in the recommendation from ET-EGOS-5, the Fifth workshop is planned to be
held in the first half of 2012. A venue in the USA is sought, the details of which are to be
determined in the coming months. Interest has been expressed by NOAA/JCSDA. The Fourth
workshop was three days long with about 40 participants. The Fifth workshop is planned to be
4 days long with 50 to 70 participants, incorporating additional participants from the THORPEX
DAOS WG.
4.
PARTICIPANTS
Same as the last workshop, the representatives from the world’s NWP centres should be
invited for their activities relating to the impact studies. Additional participants are welcomed from
THORPEX and the other related programmed.
5.
FUNDING
As in the past workshops, WMO is prepared to provide support to invited speakers and/or
other participants within the available resources to be allocated for this event in the next financial
period. Co-sponsorship from the local organizers and other WMO or co-sponsored programmes,
such as DPFS and THORPEX, is expected. Additional funding from satellite agencies is
conceivable.
