One level teaspoon of salt 6. 8 lumps or 8 teaspoons of sugar INFORMATION OF ORAL REHYDRATION (ORS) AND SUGAR/SALT SOLUTIONS (SSS) People with diarrhoea including Cholera MUST drink plenty of liquids and go immediately to a health facility. People with diarrhoea/runny stomach and Cholera loose fluid from their body and get dehydrated (body dry) very, very quickly. It is this that can make the person die. It is very, very important to give plenty of fluids to anyone with diarrhoea, by giving plenty of drinks to a person you can stop them dying. Steps to mix home-made ORS ORS or sugar salt solution is the best thing to drink but you can also drink coconut water, orange, grape, pineapple juice and other fruit juices. 1. Packet of ORS (check expire date) 6. 2 lumps or 2 teaspoons of sugar 2. A very clean one litre jug, bowl or cup 7. 3 finger pinch of salt or ¼ teaspoon baking soda (bicarbonate) 3. Clean bottles or jug with lid/cover 4. One litre (= 3 soft drink bottles) of boiled water or water from hand pump Steps to mix home-made ORS 5. A clean spoon 1. Empty contents of the ORS packet in jug, bowl or cup 5. Add a three finger pinch of salt OR ¼ teaspoon of baking soda into water mix 3. Pour in water and mix well 4. Pour ORS mix into bottles or jug and cover with a lid/top 6. Stir very well to dissolve the ingredients 7. Pour mix into very clean bottles or jug and cover with a lid/top
