Course in basics of sheep and goat
raising – 2011
We are happy to invite you to a national expanded course on raising
sheep and goats which will take place between 27 October 2011 – 29
December 2011 at the conference hall of the Ministry of Agriculture –
Central region, in Hadera.
The course is aimed at new sheep and goat farmers and veteran ones
who are interested in refreshing and enriching their basic knowledge on
the various topics of raising sheep and goats.
The course will include theoretical study and hands-on practice, practice
sessions, and demonstrations on feeding, health, and reproduction.
Course dates
The course includes 11 sessions, as of follows: 9 sessions on Thursdays,
on: 27 October 2011, 3 November 2011, 17 November 2011, 24
November 2011, 1 December 2011, 8 December 2011, 15 December
2011, 22 December 2011, 29 December 2011; the 2 additional sessions
will take place on Tuesdays, on: 8 November 2011,13 December 2011
(tour).
Course hours: 9:00-16:00.
Course cost:
The price of the course for each participant is NIS 1300 including
lecturers' fees, written professional material, lunches, light refreshments,
and the tour.
Those registering by 11 November 2011 will receive a discount, and the
price of the course for them is only NIS 1200.
The course is strongly recommended for those who have not yet
participated in a similar course, or for those who have participated in
the past but are interested in refreshing and enriching their
knowledge.

Course topics:

The sheep and goat industry in Israel – importance, extent, industry trends
and institutions, planning policy, payment, and price of sheep and goats' milk

Building planning – division, facilities, and equipment for rearing sheep and
goats

Fertility – preparing sheep and goats for breeding and lambing and kidding,
breeding system in sheep and goats, synchronization, insemination,
breeding, and lambing and kidding

Health – vaccinations, newborn diseases, poisoning, miscarriage, zoonotic
diseases, metabolic diseases, parasites, healing for flocks, udder diseases
and milk production, hoof diseases, lung diseases, intestinal diseases,
vaccination regulations, transportation and transferring sheep and goats.

Basics of feeding – physiology and anatomy of the digestive system, norms
for feeding sheep and goats, food (concentrated, bulky, supplementary
materials, mixtures, and mixes), planning portions and practice, problems
with sheep and goat feeding (copper poisoning, feeding sheep and goats at
late gestation), the world fodder market.

Raising newborns – receiving newborns from lambing and kidding,
colustrum, milk replacer, fattening lambs, rearing female lambs, diseases of
newborn sheeps and goats.

Nurture – sheep and goat races, genetics and nurture

Management – managing a flock of sheep or goats and its importance, farm
administration systems and software, gathering data for care analysis
software, making professional decisions for managing a flock.
Calculating profitability – principles of economics, calculating the required

investments for setting up a flock and economics for the sheep and goat
industry
Tour – a tour of sheep and goat farms and food center

