Institution North Carolina State University University of Maryland University of Maryland Date 1995 1991 1983 Major Field Plant Breeding and Genetics Agronomy Conservation and Resource Development III. EXPERIENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION 2008 - Present: Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Project leader for the soybean breeding and genetics program. Basic and applied classical and molecular genetic research and development targeting genetically improved germplasm and new cultivars with enhanced productivity, disease resistance, herbicide tolerance, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Development of lines with added value from improved protein composition and quality and modified fatty acid composition. Cooperate with other investigators on key projects. Mentor graduate students and teach courses on plant breeding and genetics. 2003 - 2008: Associate Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Project leader for the soybean breeding and genetics program as outlined above. 2001 – 2003: Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Sciences and Landscape Systems, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Project leader for the soybean breeding and genetics program as outlined above. 1 Vincent R. Pantalone 2000 – 2001: Assistant Professor, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Project leader for the soybean breeding and genetics program as outlined above. 1998 – 2000: Research Assistant Professor, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Project leader for the soybean breeding and genetics program as outlined above. 1997 – 1998: Postdoctoral Research Geneticist, USDA,ARS Raleigh, NC. Identified useful sources of soybean germplasm to broaden genetic diversity for value-added traits. Developed genetic resources for enhancement of yielding ability, oil and protein content, and quality attributes of seed constituents. Initiated population development for low saturated, low polyunsaturated soybean oil for enhanced consumer preference and superior performance. Developed lines with high polyunsaturated oil for potential industrial applications. 1995 – 1997: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Crop Science Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Conducted inheritance studies from interspecific hybridizations and identified alternative alleles for -6 and -3 desaturases in wild soybean (G. soja) accessions. Identified a negative association between seed mass and linolenic acid concentration in glycerolipid oil fractions. Conducted a backcross introgression program to incorporate genes for modified oleic and linolenic fatty acids from the wild species to soybean cultivars. Developed a restricted selection index and established two cycles of diallel intermatings for three soybean populations to develop high yielding, high oil, high protein germplasm. 1991 - 1994: Graduate Research Assistant, Crop Science Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. My research project utilized a drought-tolerant, exotic germplasm resource with enhanced nodulation to overcome the negative association between protein and yield. Heritability of a fibrous root trait and genotypic correlations with yield, protein, and other agronomic traits was determined from multi-environment field experiments. 1986 – 1991: Graduate Student, Department of Agronomy, University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Evaluated the salt tolerance of accessions of perennial Glycine from the University of Maryland core collection and identified salt-tolerant germplasm resources. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using both hydroponic solution cultures and saline soil amendments. I characterized growth responses in control and salt-stressed conditions, developed a visual scoring index of leaf chlorosis, chemically analyzed plant tissue samples, and determined thresholds of tolerance for Glycine max and perennial Glycine species. Two saline soil field sites were used to identify salt-tolerant soybean cultivars and experimental breeding lines 1986 – 1991: Agricultural Research Technician, Department of Agronomy, University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Assisted with the soybean breeding program for increased yield, disease and pest resistance, and tolerance to environmental stresses. Conducted State of Maryland official variety trials in multiple locations. Provided graduate students, faculty, and visiting scientists with technical support in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field 2 Vincent R.
