UWP CAMPUS TECHNOLOGY SERVICES LAB USE POLICY Computers in the open access labs are intended primarily for use by UW Parkside students, faculty and staff, for individual reference and research purposes. UW Parkside welcomes use of the computers by the general public, but academic work by current UW Parkside students takes precedence over all other uses of the lab; including but not limited to, non-academic games, chatting, email or web surfing. A user engaged in non-academic activity may be asked to give up his/her computer to allow another user to carry out legitimate academic work. Individuals may not monopolize lab computers by using more than one computer at a time, or by spending an inordinate amount of time on a computer. Some labs provide workstations for users with disabilities. When users identify themselves as disabled, and request immediate access, they shall be given priority access to a designated station. UW Parkside is not responsible for the theft or damage of personal property left unattended in the labs. Computer users must not install non-academic software on lab computers, attempt to modify the setup or configuration of lab computers, or cause any computer-related disruption or damage. Individuals must not tamper with lab computers and peripherals, including turning off or shutting down equipment, disconnecting cables, attaching personal cables, or attempting to repair equipment. Laptop cable connections to the Internet should be made only at designated docking stations. Computer users assume any risk of damage or corruption to personal data and storage devices as a result of using lab computers. The Internet contains controversial material. In accordance with the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, UW-Parkside neither restricts lawful access to materials, nor protects lab users from information they may find offensive. Campus Technology Services is not responsible for exposure of minors or adults to potentially offensive material accessed via the Internet using lab equipment. Due to the public nature of computer screens, individuals should be aware of and respect the desire of others not to be inadvertently exposed to material and images that they find disruptive or offensive. Users are asked to be sensitive to the fact that some screen images, sounds or messages might be distracting or create an atmosphere of intimidation or harassment for others. The lab staff respects the privacy of users and do not routinely scrutinize the information or images displayed on any user’s computer screen. However, the lab staff may take steps to maintain an environment conducive to study and research. While the University of Wisconsin-Parkside encourages the use of our computing and network facilities as a medium of free expression, it must also abide by the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and Wisconsin laws on obscenity and pornography. All users of the lab’s computers and electronic resources have a responsibility to use these resources in an ethical and legal manner. Users must comply with state and federal law and must abide by the UW-Parkside’s Administrative Policy #58, Network Access and Code of Practice http://www.uwp.edu/departments/governance/admin/policy/policy58.htm Computer users must observe applicable intellectual property laws and should be aware that many Internet resources are copyright protected. Individuals who do not comply with lab policies may be asked to leave and may be refused future access. They may also be subject to warning, suspension, prosecution, forfeiture, and restitution, as well as criminal penalties and civil fines, and may be accountable to civil authorities and the university. UW-Parkside lab policies supplement other UW-Parkside and UW System policies. In order for the Campus Technology Services to provide a safe environment conducive to the pursuit of learning and research, the following guidelines for users have been established. Lab users are asked to report disturbances and other problems to the staff at the assistance desk Individuals should be thoughtful of others who are using the Labs. Lab users must not engage in disorderly or disruptive behavior, in activities that could cause personal injury, in activities that interfere with the normal use and operation of the labs, or in activities that interfere with the privacy of others. It is expected that non-disruptive conversations (cell phones excluded) and other reasonable noise will occur in the open labs. Lab users should turn down their cell phone ringers or switch them to vibrate while in the labs. If a call is necessary, the conversation needs take place in the elevator lobby area near the stairwell; conversations should be kept brief. If the conversation is not going to be brief patrons are encouraged to take their belongings with them. Lab users are to use headphones to listen to music. The music should not be loud enough to be disruptive to others. Individuals may not enter and use the labs without appropriate attire, including a shirt and shoes. Children should never be left unsupervised. Parents, not UW-Parkside, are responsible for their children’s use of the lab, including access to electronic resources. Only individuals acting on university business may enter staff areas. Lab users are required to leave at closing, during emergency situations and evacuations, and whenever requested to leave by lab staff or safety personnel. Unauthorized individuals may not enter or remain in the labs during times when it is closed to the public. Lab users must not tamper with emergency mechanisms such as fire alarms or alarms in elevators, or open emergency exits in non-emergency situations. Vending, peddling, and/or solicitation of merchandise or services, including but not limited to begging or panhandling, displaying or distributing advertisements, brochures, pamphlets, petitions, or other materials, and/or conducting unauthorized surveys, are prohibited in the labs. Campus units which desire to have their handouts available to the university community will be referred to the Information Center in the Union. Single copies of handouts relating to specific events may be accepted for use by the Lab Manager. Lab users should not subject lab users or employees to physical or verbal abuse or harassment. Food and Beverages are not allowed in the labs. Please leave them at the designated area in the lab. Lab users may not smoke or use any other form of tobacco in the lab. Substances creating strong pervasive odors that constitute a nuisance to others are not permitted in the lab. Lab users must not be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, or possess, sell, or use alcohol or illegal drugs. Lab users must not engage in sexual harassment, overt sexual behavior, or lewd or lascivious behavior, including inappropriate sexual advances and indecent exposure. Unauthorized firearms or other weapons, fireworks, explosives, or other dangerous devices or substances are not permitted in the lab.
