Dear Fourth Graders, It’s time for you to play news reporter! Your next book report is going to be a mystery. You will be reading a mystery book independently. Then you will report on the mystery elements. You will present the evidence in your own newspaper. Follow the steps below to do your best job. Good luck! Happy sleuthing! 1. Identify and organize the mystery elements with the attached graphic organizer. 5. Begin reporting about your mystery book. Use the graphic organizer to help you remember what to include, and the mystery vocabulary to be the best reporter. Student signature __________________________________________ Parent signature ___________________________________________ Your newspaper must include the following information: Section 1: Newspaper title – choose a name for your newspaper (Gazette, messenger, post, journal…) Section title – Give your newspaper page a section title ( mystery, crime… Date and clipart – every newspaper has a date, and has a logo. Headline – Full title of your story Section 2: Picture – a picture of an important scene from the mystery. Should not be the cover of the book. Caption – a sentence or two that tells what is going on in the picture and who is in the picture. Section 3: Plot Summary – Write an article that describes the plot of the story. It should include the clues that help the main character(s) solve the mystery. Section 4: Main character picture - Draw a picture of the main character. Use details from the story to help you decide what the character looks like. Character traits – Write a news article that describes the character and his/her traits. Include what makes him/her a great mystery solver. Section 5: Setting: Write an article about the setting. Talk about what events might be going on where the mystery took place. Time and place. Section 6: Distraction/Red Herring: Write an article about the distraction/red herring in the story. What clue throws the main character or the reader off?
