Marine Animal Brochure
You will be creating a computer generated Marine Animal Brochure. Your brochure will be done on an 8.5” x 11” piece of
paper, front-to-back, folded into a tri-fold.
Pick a marine animal that you have an interest in learning more about. You will be researching background information about
your selected marine animal and applying knowledge learned through out the “Oceanography and Climate Unit” to your
marine animal and its survival in its ocean environment. The Brochure is worth 25 pts and is due on
_____________________.
Include the following criteria:
Format (4 pts)






Your brochure must be computer generated and can be made using Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Word (using
columns), or by cutting and pasting typed sections and pictures onto a piece of construction paper.
A Title for your brochure. Should be the name of your selected marine animal and a picture of your animal.
(Reminder: Be sure to put your name on the front.)
Headings for each of the FIVE SECTIONS listed below on your brochure. You may also want to use Subheadings
within the five sections to further organize your brochure
Print out a final copy of your “brochure before the class period it is due. (Note: You will lose this point if you need to
print your project out in class on the day its due).
Your brochure should be neat (this includes: folding & any items you cut and glue on; attaching brochure pages by
gluing NOT stapling or leaving apart; making sure your brochure panels match the columns of text; as well as proof
reading)
Information needs to be on all 6 panels of the brochure.
Pictures & Labels (4 pts)



Include at least one picture for each of the required FIVE SECTIONS listed below.
Every picture should have a caption or label that describes how the picture is related to the section.
Make sure the picture and its label are relevant to the section it is under.
o NOTE: Each SECTION below provides a description of the type of picture needed for that section.
Completeness of Information (2 pts)



Completed information on each of the FIVE SECTIONS outlined below.
Information you provide should be thorough, concise & in YOUR OWN words.
The information you provide should be brief but it should be self explanatory (suggest using bullets).
Section 1: Aquatic Classification (2 pts)



Determine the animal’s aquatic classification (plankton, nekton, or benthos).
Describe why your animal is classified as: plankton, nekton, or benthos. What are the key characteristics?
Picture – needs to show your animal displaying some of these key characteristics.
Section 2: Background Information (3 pts)


Provide FOUR detailed interesting and unique pieces (not common knowledge) of information about your animal that
help to explain how it survives in the ocean (Ex: What it eats? How it eats? How it moves? How it survives from
predators? Etc.)
Picture – needs to show one or several of these interesting survival techniques
Section 3: Ocean Location & Currents (3 pts)



Ocean Location: Provide the name of the ocean or oceans as well as specific locations of where your animal lives.
(Ex: the South Atlantic off the coast of South Africa)
Ocean Current: Name the ocean current or currents your animal lives within or encounters. Describe the current(s),
such as, location, type of current (warm or cold) and why it is warm or cold.
Picture – needs to show the ocean location and current(s) that your animal lives in.
Section 4: Habitat (Ocean Life Zone) (4 pts) ***Use pages 53-57 in your textbook***




Provide the name of the ocean life zone(s) that your animal lives in
Describe whether your zone(s) is located in the benthic OR pelagic environment
Describe the characteristics of the zone(s) (use the textbook); could also include the zones location along the ocean
floor (ex: abyssal plain) and temperature zone (ex: deep zone)
Picture – needs to show where this zone is located in the ocean
Section 5: Human Impact on Marine Animal (3 pts)


Provide at least ONE detailed example of how humans are having a positive or negative impact on your animal’s
survival.
Picture – needs to show the effects that humans have on your marine animal or its habitat.
