Date: March 30th, 2013 Right to Education (RTE) Checklist The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or Right to Education Act (RTE), which was passed by the Indian parliament on 4 August 2009, makes education a fundamental right of every child in India. In addition, the law also prescribed standards that must be adhered to by all the schools (private run and NGO run), failing which, the school will be closed. All Asha’s projects that run formal schools are also required to conform to RTE rules and regulations. A few Asha funded schools in Uttar Pradesh have already been closed down, because of their non-conformity with RTE norms and regulations. At this point of time, it is critical for us as an organization to understand the status of RTE implementation in all the formal schools that we support, and take necessary steps to prevent further closure of Asha supported schools. A questionnaire has been prepared to obtain information from Asha project partners on RTE implementation in their schools. Please understand that it is urgent for Asha to get this survey done as quickly as possible, so that necessary steps can be taken at the earliest to prevent unfortunate closures of Asha schools for noncompliance with the RTE law. Please return this questionnaire after answering the questions to the best of your knowledge by April 30th 2013. Thank you in advance for your co-operation and support.
