Area of Focus (Literacy, Curriculum, Assessment, PLC, Mandated Training, Other) Differentiation & Collaboration Description of Activity Teachers will participate in various workshops (Building Student Relationships, Building Rigor & Classroom Community, Building School Culture) designed to emphasize the importance of building an effective classroom community which is directly linked to effective differentiation of instruction. Teachers will learn how to use better pre-assessments and formative assessments when planning instruction to effectively differentiate for their diverse student population. By 2009 student learning will increase in writing as evidences by 88% of all students scoring proficient/distinguished in on-demand writing/5% novice. By 2009 student learning will increase in writing as evidences by 0% of our male students scoring in the novice range in on-demand writing. Area of Focus (Literacy, Curriculum, Assessment, PLC, Mandated Training, Other) District Writing Plan Description of Activity Teachers will learn the new District Writing Plan including revisiting the key components when teaching the craft of writing. Date of Activity August 6, 2009 & September 30, 2009 Number of Hours of PD Credit 6-12 hours Follow Up Activities The literacy coach will work with the writing lab classroom teachers to refine their writing instruction. Teachers (who are new to Goshen including all first year teachers) will participate in the Goshen Literacy Project (GLP) for a minimum of 2 years to observe effective writing instruction in one of the lab classroom settings. The literacy coach will meet with horizontal teams including PLC teams and individual teachers to offer continued support in the area of writing. By 2009, student learning will increase in math as measured by 87% of the students scoring proficient and distinguished. By 2009, student learning will increase in math as measured by 72% of special education students scoring in the proficient/distinguished range/4% in the novice range. Area of Focus (Literacy, Curriculum, Assessment, PLC, Mandated Training, Other) Continue to Build Professional Learning Community (PLC) as outlined by DuFour Description of Activity Extend the work in progress during planning team meetings as PLC facilitators will meet with their horizontal team as teachers will share ideas on instructional strategies to ensure that all students are at/above proficiency. Date of Activity The third and fourth Wednesday of September, November, January, February, March, April including 6 early release days Number of Hours of PD Credit 12 hours Follow Up Activities The PLC teams will review and analyze student work and provide instructional strategies including the development of intervention plans for students who are performing below grade level. The facilitators will meet with the intervention team (monthly) to report the information shared during each PLC meeting including information regarding research articles, books, and strategies to share with other PLC teams. The intervention team will follow up with the teachers and the PLC teams to evaluate if the new shared strategies are effective including helping teachers to reflect on their own teaching practices and next steps of instruction.
