Local Authority Area Profile – Aberdeenshire
Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2012 (www.scotland.gov.uk/simd)

National Share of most deprived areas
The barcode chart shows how the levels of deprivation in a local authority compare with the rest of Scotland.
Each bar on the barcode represents a datazone and is positioned according to its deprivation rank: the more
deprived a datazone is, the further to the left it will be positioned. A concentration of lines close together shows as
a block. If a block appears towards the left hand side of the scale it shows a concentration of deprived areas,
while a concentration towards the right hand side shows a concentration of areas at the least deprived end of the
distribution.

Impact of Deprivation on Outcomes
Sample of how SIMD data can be combined with other indicators
The SIMD can be combined with other data to show the impact of deprivation on a range of outcome areas. By
way of illustration, examples are provided here for two indicators. The same kind of analysis can be done using
any locally available dataset which includes datazone level information.
One dataset is percentage of women who
self-report smoking at their ante-natal
booking visit.
Chart 5 shows that the percentage of women
smoking at ante-natal booking decreases as
deprivation decreases.
Those in the most deprived 20% of areas in
Aberdeenshire were almost twice as likely to
smoke at booking than those in even quintile
2 (30% compared to 17% in 2008-10).
