Scene 3: ** Comic Relief – The Porter scene relieves feelings of tension and disgust after the murder and blooding scene of King’s murder. - The Porter compares Inverness to Hell and makes several sexual references 10. Who is knocking on the door? Lennox and Macduff are knocking. They have come to wake up/ pick up King Duncan. 11. What does the porter say alcohol does? Alcohol causes the nose to turn red, makes one sleepy/pass-out, and makes one have to pee. It also causes lust (horny) but takes it away. 12. What does Macduff say the King commanded him to do? Macduff has to pick up the King after the King spent the night at Inverness. 13. What does Lennox say about the evening? He comments on how stormy it has been, hearing howlings of death, earthquakes; crazy weird night – unusual; Elizabethan Heirarchy of the Universe 14. In the original text, Macduff uses the metaphor of “God’s anointed temple.” What is the meaning of this metaphor? What is Macduff comparing to that temple? He is comparing the temple to King Duncan. 15. What is Macduff’s response to Lady Macbeth when she asks what has happened? Why is this ironic? He says that no LADY should listen to what I have to describe, because it is too awful for a lady’s delicate ears. This is ironic, because SHE is the ONE who planned and caused the gross murder. 16. What does Macbeth say he has done in response to seeing Duncan’s body? Macbeth admits that he killed the two guards upon seeing Duncan’s dead body 17. What does Macbeth say is his reason for doing so? He SAYS he did this out of this love for Duncan; out of grief and rage. The REAL reason is so that guards cannot cause questions in Macbeth & Lady Macbeth’s story and cannot deny murdering Duncan. 18. What does Lady Macbeth do at this moment of commotion? She faints. We do not know if it is a genuine faint or fake inorder to go along with her “show”. 19. What does Banquo say he will fight against? He wants to fight against this betrayal of the king. He wants to fight against whoever hurt and went against Duncan. 20. Where do Malcolm and Donalbain decide to go? Why? They decide to flee, because they are scared they may ALSO be assassinated. Malcolm – England (Great Britain) Donalbain – Ireland Scene 4: 21. In the original text, the Old Man says, “’Tis said they eat each other.” What is he talking about? What other unnatural events have taken place since the death of Duncan? The Old Man is talking about Duncan’s horses. The horses, said to be the best of their breed, are eating each other. This is just ione example of the chaos that has erupted with Duncan’s death (nature gone loco). Another strange thing is that it’s dark during the day. Yet another unnatural act is that a large, majestic falcon was hunted and killed by a small hawk. The chain of being or the hierarchy has been disrupted. 22. What is the thought of Malcolm and Donalbain because they have fled Scotland? Some people think that the sons were the ones who plotted to murder their father, the King. It makes them look guilty. 23. Where has Macbeth gone and why has he gone there? Macbeth has gone to Scone in order to be CROWNED AS THE NEW KING!
