Section IV: Evidence of Continuing Scholarly Growth
Summary
Included in Section IV is evidence of the research projects, publications, papers, and
workshops that I have attended or presented since coming to Shippensburg. Several links
to online materials can be found through my website:

Section IV.B: Papers, Workshops, and Other Materials
Travel to professional conferences is an important part of professional development, and I
have made a commitment to attend these meetings regularly. In addition, I have
participated in, presented at, and helped organize workshops for my fellow mathematics
faculty from around the country. These workshops have led to various new avenues of
research for both myself and for Shippensburg undergraduates (see Section IV.A).
Papers and Workshops Conducted

Papers given at national conferences:
o “Flash Tools for Finite Groups,” given in the Use of Technology in Abstract
Algebra and Number Theory session at the Joint Mathematics national
meetings in New Orleans, LA, January 2007.
o “Using Technology to Explore the Dihedral Group,” given in the Fun and
Innovative Techniques for an Abstract Algebra Class session at the MathFest
national mathematics meetings in Knoxville, TN, August 2006.
o “Coloring Origami: Adjacent Edge Graphs,” presented in the Advances in
Recreational Mathematics session at MathFest national mathematics
meetings in Providence, RI, August 2004.

Papers given at regional conferences:
o “Quilting Activity Demonstration,” presented to the CETP-PA seminar
meeting at Shippensburg University, February 2004.
o “My Experience as a KTI Fellow,” presented at the SCALE Immersion Team
Meeting in Madison, WI, December 2002.
o “Solvable Groups Satisfying the Two-Prime Hypothesis,” presented at the
Special Session on Characters and Representations of Finite Groups at the
AMS Regional Meeting in Madison, WI, October 2002.

As a board member of the Young Mathematicians Network (YMN), I have organized
three panel sessions:
o “Keeping Your Research Alive,” at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New
Orleans, LA, in January 2007.
o “Undergraduate Career Paths in Mathematics,” at the Joint Mathematics
Meetings in San Antonio, TX in January 2006.
o “Career Paths for Undergraduates in Mathematics,” at the Joint Mathematics
Meetings in Atlanta, GA in January 2005.

Workshops conducted/organized:
o I was the local organizer and a presenter for the week-long Mathematical
Association of America Professional Enhancement Program (MAA PREP)
workshop held at Shippensburg University in July 2006. As local organizer, I
was responsible for all of the local arrangements for the nineteen
participants from across the country. Included here is an unsolicited thankyou note from the participants.
o Conducted “The Mathematics of Voting,” at the regional Pennsylvania
Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PCTM) Meeting in Harrisburg, PA,
October 2005.
o Conducted “The Mathematics of Origami,” at the regional Challenging All
Students in Mathematics (CHASM) professional development program in
Shippensburg, PA, July 2003.
o Conducted “Using Paper to Create Modeling Activities,” at the regional
Shippensburg University Eisenhower Professional Development Program.
Included here are my evaluations from that workshop. The participants
called my activity “excellent” and “engaging.”

Seminars and presentations:
o I have been invited to Dickinson College twice to give talks at their “Math and
Computer Science Chat” departmental seminar. The talks I presented were:

“Probability and Expectations in Games,” in April 2006.

“Designing Origami Octagons,” in April 2005.
o I have given five presentations in Shippensburg’s Math Department Seminar:

“Elections and Voting,” in October 2005.

“Graph Theory and Origami,” in September 2004.

“Square Roots in the Days of the Caveman,” in April 2004.

“Constructing Symmetry with Quilting Squares,” in February 2004.
Included here is an unsolicited thank-you note from the organizer of
the seminar.

“Origami and Mathematics,” in March 2003.
o I was a presenter in the panel session “Lessons Learned in the First Year(s),”
at the MathFest national mathematics meetings in Boulder, CO, July 2003.

From August 2002 to August 2003, I was a Project NExT fellow. Project NExT (New
Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent
Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career:
improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and
scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the
participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these
responsibilities.
o Participated in Project NExT workshops including several sessions relating
to teaching and research in mathematics at MathFest in Boulder, CO, August
2003.
o Participated in Project NExT workshops at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in
