JOB DESCRIPTION – HEAD TENNIS COACH
Sutton Tennis and Squash Club (STSC) has a long-term commitment to increase
participation and to the development of tennis.
We are a members sports and social club with modern facilities including 9 all weather
floodlit tennis courts, 2 squash courts, sociable bar with food menu and a variety of
social events.
The Head Coach is responsible for developing and overseeing the Club’s coaching
programme for all ages and abilities. As the principle interface between the Club
Committees, Club members and potential new members, the Head Coach is also
expected to contribute and shape the development of the Club in line with the Clubs
Vision. The Clubs vision is: STSC is committed to providing social and competitive
tennis to people of all ages and abilities to foster a life-long love of the game in a familyfriendly atmosphere.
Main Duties
1. To work with the Management Committee, Tennis Committee, Squash
section and others as appropriate within the club to help increase
participation and membership of the Club.
2. To create, implement and take full responsibility for the junior and adult
coaching programme, including school holiday and half-term coaching
courses. This should provide coaching for all ages and abilities.
3. To recruit suitable coaches, as required, to implement the tennis
programmes and to ensure that sufficient coaches are available to provide
all the coaching required by members. To be responsible for supervising
the performance of assistant coaches, ensuring proper and adequate
public liability cover, insurance and CRB checks.
4. To foster and develop the already established links with local schools
(primary & secondary) and initiate, lead or support junior recruitment
initiatives
5. To liaise with other sporting agencies (for example, Surrey LTA, local
schools, other tennis clubs, local authority) and establish networks in order
to increase participation in tennis.
6. To assist and participate in Club and Open tournaments and tennis events,
activities or promotions, where relevant.
7. To offer assistance and advice to the Club captains in the selection of
teams and to support and encourage those members who wish to play for
the teams as much as possible.
8. To attend Tennis Committee meetings and to provide input (in person or
by written report via the Tennis Captains) of coaching news to
management committee meetings, for the club newsletter and for the
website.
9. To attend the Club AGM and provide/ present information as required.
10. To produce attractive, accurate and timely leaflets for the promotion of the
tennis programmes, ensuring that they receive wide distribution,
particularly in schools every term, and that there is always a plentiful
supply of them in the club lobby, conservatory and on noticeboards.
11. To maintain proper registers for all coaching sessions, and to work with the
Club Secretary to ensure all records are integrated with the Club records
and on all other tennis related matters.
12. To attend meetings as required by Surrey LTA, including meetings to
ensure tournaments are held at the Club, and report back to the Tennis
Committee where appropriate.
13. To co-operate with surveys undertaken by the Club from time to time to
gain feedback about coaching.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience









Be a qualified coach with a minimum LTA qualification of Level 3: Coach
qualification and hold an LTA Coach licence
Have excellent communication and customer service skills
Previous experience in people management
Have experience of setting up and delivering quality tennis development
programmes
Have experience of working with schools to develop quality school links
Have the capability of providing local competitive opportunities for juniors
and adults
Ability to work on their own with beginners and improvers in groups and
individuals
To be able to work effectively with all club members from mini tennis red to
U10 performance to adult AEGON team tennis
To have strong administrative, and appropriate computer skills (to produce
relevant materials of a professional standard), to manage the off-court
responsibilities of a Head Coach
