The practice is open to all new patients living within a reasonable distance of the surgery who are eligible for NHS treatment. The surgery is very busy with over 11,000 patients registered so for minor ailments you may be able to help yourself or friends by consulting the local pharmacist or following the tips on the next page. Kamsons Pharmacy (Mitcham)- 020 8648 0429, Auckland Rogers Pharmacy (Tooting) 020 8672 6737 You can consult the pharmacists (Kamsons or Auckland Rogers) for free advice and medication if you have minor ailments like: Thrush, Head lice, Sore throat, Earache, Temperature, Hay fever, Indigestion, Heart burn, Diarrhoea, Haemorrhoids, Constipation, Thread worm, Athletes foot, Nappy rash, Conjunctivitis. Colds and Flu are viruses and do not need antibiotics. Treatment should be take Paracetamol to reduce temperature, drink plenty of fluids and be patient. It may take a few days for the symptoms to abate. Diarrhoea and Vomiting whilst unpleasant at the time does not usually last very long. Treat by taking in fluids only (no food) for 24 hours. Dioralyte and Rehydrate which can be purchased from the chemist and will help to replace the salts lost. If blood is seen in diarrhoea or severe pain is experienced then you should consult the doctor. Small babies and very young children are more at risk and the doctor should be consulted. Backache Strains and Sprains should respond in a few days if rest and painkillers are taken. If symptoms continue or get worse then consult the doctor. Head Lice. The nurse or chemist can advise on eradication techniques. Bites and stings Most will not need treatment but antihistamine tablets can be obtained from the chemist and will relieve most of the symptoms . Burns Apply large quantities of cold water to the area until the pain subsides. (This could take 15 minutes.) If skin is blistered but unbroken apply a dry dressing for a few days but if the skin is broken or the burn area is larger than 4-5inches consult the doctors as soon as possible. Chickenpox The eruptions can be treated with Calamine lotion to stop itching. The infectious period is 2-3 days before rash appears and 5 days after. Children can return to school after all lesions have crusted over.
