2008 CI Science Summit - Revised Agenda (April 28 Version) Tues 29 Apr 0900 – 1045 ‘Head-in-the-sky’ science plenary presentations [Chair – Jatna Supriatna] Biodiversity assessments as foundation for conservation priorities and responses – Simon Stuart Identification and targeting of KBAs – Jose Maria da Silva Biodiversity and human wellbeing 2: Economic and policy dimensions of Ecosystem services – Will Turner and Rosimeiry Portela 1045 – 1100 Tea break 1100 – 1230 Breakout groups 3 breakout groups (biological sciences, socio-economic sciences, science-to-action) to address the question: “What are the emerging priorities for head-in-the-sky science?” Each group will consider the following as framework for discussion and reporting back: Human wellbeing linkages for biodiversity conservation – what are we doing? What else should we be doing? Future threats for ‘early warning’ – what are the major ones to anticipate? Decision supports tools – what are we producing? What else should be producing? 1230 – 1330 Lunch 1330 – 1430 Plenary – Group Reports I [Chair – Celia Harvey] 3 Breakout Group Reports on ‘Feet-in-the-mud’ science plus discussion 1430 – 1530 Plenary – Group Reports II [Chair – David Emmett] 3 Breakout Group reports on ‘Head-in-the-sky’ science plus discussion 1530 – 1545 Tea Break 1545 – 1700 Closing Session [Chair – Fred Boltz] Results of Social Network Analysis on Science in CI – Andrea Margit & Trish Silber Synthesis of recommendations and next steps – Tom Brooks Closing remarks – Claude Gascon 1730 – 1930 Science Reception to Inaugurate ‘Center without Walls’ Science Summit - BREAKOUT GROUPS II Three Groups, each with a Facilitator and Rapporteur 1 Terrestrial 2 Terrestrial with freshwater bias 3 Marine Composition Each group should include staff with biological sciences or socioeconomic sciences background, as well as staff involved with implementation (science-to-action). Tasks Each group will address the question relative to the designated biome/ecological system, and at multiple scales – global, regional, national, landscape/seascape: “What are the emerging priorities for head-in-the-sky science?” The following should be considered as framework for discussion and reporting back: Human wellbeing linkages for biodiversity conservation – what are we doing? What else should we be doing? Future threats for ‘early warning’ – what are the major ones to anticipate? Decision supports tools – what are we producing? What else should be producing? Reporting Each group will generate a report that includes the following: General highlights of general discussion Summary of emerging science priorities at multiple scales, based on: o Linking human wellbeing to biodiversity conservation o Future threats o Decision-support tools Thematic Alignment of Staff for the ‘Center without Walls’ In order to facilitate substantive engagement in research by all scientists across the organization, we will be following-up on emerging priorities identified at the Summit. Please complete the following details to help align you with the appropriate research teams. Name:_______________________________________ Division:______________________________________ A. Please check the biome(s)/ecological system that best represents your expertise: ___Terrestrial ___Terrestrial with freshwater bias ___Marine B. Please rank from highest (5) to lowest (1) how the Plenary Presentations appeal to level/scale of interest Presentation Topics Global Regional National Corridor Site Biodiversity assessments as foundation for conservation priorities and responses Climate change: Challenges and opportunities for biodiversity conservation Biodiversity and human wellbeing 1: Social and health dimensions of Ecosystem Services Biodiversity and human wellbeing 2: Economic and policy dimensions of Ecosystem services Corridor planning and modeling for landscapescale conservation Identification and targeting of KBAs C. What 2-3 actions you would recommend for FY09 toward making the ‘Center without walls’ work? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________
