Jersey Horse Driving Society Breezing Competition 28th October
Samares Manor was the venue on 28th October for the annual Best Brass and
Breezing (shallow ploughing) competitions. The day was dedicated to the late
Len Pipon who died earlier this year.
The judges Tosh Germain and Guernseyman John Le Cheminant found the
judging between Tara Hill’s Gibus and John Vibert’s Ben very close and
eventually decided the trophy winner to be Gibus.
The breezing was divided into two classes. The novice class being open to
competitors who had not won three times with the same horse or mule. The
competitors were allowed two assistants whilst in the Open class only one was
allowed.
An area of 15 perches was ploughed by each of the five competitors. The judges
decided to mark using a points system with points allocated for turnout, first
furrow, depth, evenness, trash burial, short turns, last furrow and ends out of a
total score of 100.
John Vibert assisted by David Gallichan won the Open Class with his Dales pony
Ben with 86 points whilst Paul Le Miere assisted by Les Langlois won the Novice
Class with Gloria Jenkins’ horse Marco with an excellent score of 89 points.
Newcomer to the class Jackie Rondel with her young shire horse and assisted by
her husband Phil was close behind with a score of 86 points.
