Roof positioning in the spotlight
Second prize for Hestal’s roof monitoring system in the 2015 Trailer
Innovation awards
Wiehl/Hanover, 26.9.2014 --- Inadvertently driving with a raised roof increases fuel consumption
and often leads to damage at bridges and crossings. To minimise this risk, F. Hesterberg & Söhne
GmbH & Co. KG is presenting a roof monitoring system at the IAA 2014. The system recently won
second place in the Components category of the 2015 Trailer Innovation awards.
Until now, truck drivers could only say with certainty whether their semi-truck pop-top roof was
raised or lowered by getting out of their cab and having a look. In the future, Hesterberg will be
able to send this information directly to the cab itself, and if connected to an idem telematics
system, to the shipping company as well.
This is made possible by combining the LiftMaster roof-lifting system with reliable sensor
technology: when loading begins, the integrated sensor sends a signal to the display in the cab
and to the shipping company, if the roof is mechanically or hydraulically raised by the LiftMaster
located in the corners of the truck’s superstructure. When loading is finished, the roof is released
and the sensor sends another signal. That is to say, the system provides constant information
about the position of the roof.
“For drivers and for shipping companies themselves, the further development of the LiftMaster
means more transparency in their loading and transport processes. It means that driving off with
the roof inadvertently raised is almost impossible. If this does happen, both the driver and the
shipping company receive an email alarm via the idem telematics system”, explains Dirk Miesen,
CEO of F. Hesterberg & Söhne GmbH & Co. KG. This minimises the risk of accidents when
passing underneath bridges, for example. It also simultaneously ensures increased security and
efficiency, since driving with a raised roof leads to increased fuel consumption.
Through the intelligent linking of sensor-equipped running gear and superstructures, and through
scalable and user-friendly telematics solutions, the BPW Group offers co-ordinated systems that
help shipping and transport companies to operate efficiently and sustainably.
Hesterberg will be presenting its roof monitoring system on the BPW Group booth at the IAA,
located in position C 31 in Hall 26.
