Note from the recorder, Andy Ulicny:
I wish to note for you, the researcher, some of my idiosyncrasies in order to assist the user
of this file. I worked using a laptop computer and a nice lawn chair, enjoying the cooler hours
of the morning and evenings in the summer 2008.
I did not create an index, I have no computer program to do so.
I recommend the user employ the “find” function on the computer under the “edit” tab to
more quickly locate names. Due to spelling variations, you may choose to find mere parts of
names rather than full spellings, then jump by and eliminate those proving to be not useful.
Be very aware of the variety of spellings! It is irrelevant how you spell your name today.
In family plots, I have seen 3 distinct variations of the same name through the three
generations. I have made every attempt to record the name’s exact spelling as listed on each
tombstone.
I enumerated tombstones in sections/ areas, but I did not list rows. I felt this would be
too time consuming and it was more important to cover more graves and more cemeteries.
I’m generally attempting to enumerate in a flowing pattern in each area. Generally I’m
moving along the row and then wending back, but I often will jump ahead to the next row if
I am in easy position to see a tombstone, or if the adjacent plot seems related to the one I’m
currently recording. I do note when I start a new major section. This record was created
as an electronic source, precise genealogists and family historians may desire to check and
see the exact stone or maybe get a photograph. Understanding my approach will provide
you with a general area, but you’ll have to look around a bit.
As for stones in the same plot, I have tried to keep all the stones in one plot together since
these people were most likely related. I indicate the plot by not skipping lines. If many
names are on one stone, I usually tried to indent those on the stone unless the surname itself
has changed. If other stones are in the same plot, I retyped the surname but did not skip a
line.
As for individuals in each plot or on one stone, I have made an attempt to list the individual’s
names from the eldest generation toward the most recent if it is apparent. At times, with
double names on stones, I do not even know which name matches the surnames. Researchers
should be able to sort this out in the census records.
Anything in italics is my personal addition, not something from the stone. I am somewhat
familiar with some of these families from my research and although I do not wish for this to
be an annotated record, when I could list some obvious factual relationships I did. On rare
occasion I may have even done some genealogical research to attempt to clarify the surnames
of people on these stones. But, this obviously would be a never ending project of its own.
llll
You will occasionally note the use of “?” with dates and names.
If the stone was worn, or oddly scripted and I was unsure of information… I used a “?” aside
of my best guess. Check the stone yourself and you too hazard your own approximation.
I am sure that I am guilty of some typographical errors and a few missed stones;
however, I know that accuracy in recording is imperative. Many of these older, immigrant
names are a bit off from the typical contemporary names we see in English used today.
I was particularly attentive with the more unique names to accurately show the spelling on the
stone.
For facility in typing I have used numbers for months and the more computer-friendly
style of recording dates using periods. When capable I have, for the most part, translated
months listed in other languages. In my listings, the month is always listed first in the
standard American manner of recording.
I have also, on occasion, included some added prayers, or sentiments recorded on the stone,
but this is not complete. For speed in recording, I have chosen to be rather abbreviated with
recording military service. Listing a fuller account has proven to be very time consuming.
When a military footstone provided more exact detail than the headstone (such as full exact
birth and death dates) I obviously have recorded that.

Transcription is now up to Tool Shed on the Right side except for one
area of ground just prior to the tool shed. This is a section of what
appears to be the earliet burials in this cemetery. Many have very small
markers. My feeling is that this is the area originally provided by St.
Casimir’s Polish Cemetery to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish for
burials. Later, the rest of the ground was officially sold to Our Lady of
Mt Carmel Parish to set up a full formal cemetery. I will attempt to
enumerate these now. Anticipate many illegible markers and unmarked
older graves.

Traffic Circle – Large Monument - Crucifixion
Near end of cemetery limits.
Honors the grave of long time pastor Father Romano.
In Loving Memory of
“Father Mike”
Rev. Michael Romagno
Ordained May 22, 1937
12.7.1906
2.10.1997
End of transcription.
In the immortal words of Squire Jay R. Zane…
“Last one to leave the cemetery, please close the gate. “
******************
In Annunciation Cemetery, the front right front corner as one looks
from the highway was reserved for the burial of Catholic nonparishioners.
Recognizing that many of the immigrants coming into Shenandoah and
the neaqrby coal patches were Roman Catholic but did not yet have
parishes or cemeteries of their ethnicity, the parish allowed for their
burial here in sacred ground.
llll
Since the Slavic immigrants already did have the Lithuanian and Polish
Cemeteries, most of these interments are Italians buried prior to 1925
and the establishment of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and
Cemetery. However, a number of other ethnicities are also seen.
The majority of the burials are the deaths of children. Practically all
stones are smaller older stones and often quite hard to read . It is
assured that many burials here are unmarked.
Later, I will also attempt to cut and paste other early names from
obviously Italian families here when noted in other areas outside of these
invisible boarders. Many are close by, just outside of the area I’ve
circumscribed intermingled with parishioners of Annunciation.

Just one More addition from Annunciation:
Near the old Wooden Water Tank, Midway up the cemetery along the far right boarder is a
corner with are a number of Italian Graves. These are obviously grouped together purposely.
Apparently these Italian Roman Catholics who did not yet have their own cemetery or parish
wanted to be buried in a Catholic cemetery. It seems this area was established for deaths in the
Influenza epidemic of 1918
