THEATER OF WAR IS PRESENTED AT
University of California – Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA (January 30-31) – Outside the Wire, a social impact company, will
present two performances of Theater of War in Santa Barbara. The first will be held
at the Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara on January 30th at 7:00 PM and the
second at the Hatlen Theater at UC Santa Barbara on January 31st at 4:00 PM. The
performances are sponsored by the UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center
series Fallout: In the Aftermath of War, the Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of
Ethics, Religion and Public Life and the UCSB Department of Theater and Dance.
Theater of War presents readings of Sophocles' Ajax to military and civilian
communities across the United States, Europe and Japan. This ancient play
timelessly and universally depicts the visible and invisible wounds of war. By
presenting this play to military and civilian audiences, the hope is to de-stigmatize
psychological injury, increase awareness of post-deployment psychological health
issues, disseminate information regarding available resources, and foster greater
family, community, and troop resilience.
Each performance is approximately 2 hours long. The readings from the play are
followed by discussion with panelists from the local civilian and military
communities, and a facilitated town-hall style audience discussion.
This performance will feature: Brian O'Byrne (Doubt on Broadway, The Coast Of
Utopia at Lincoln Center Theater, Mildred Pierce), Keith David (The Princess and the
Frog, Coraline, and Crash), Tate Ellington (The Philanthropist on Broadway, Taking
Chance, The Good Wife) and April Grace (Magnolia, Fame, I Am Legend).

Outside the Wire is a social impact company that uses theater and a variety of other
media to address pressing public health and social issues, such as combat-related
psychological injury, end of life care, prison reform, political violence and torture,
and the de-stigmatization of the treatment of substance abuse and addiction.
To date there have been over 200 performances of Theater of War for military and
civilian communities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Over 40,000
service members, veterans, and their families have attended and participated in
Theater of War performances and discussions.

About the IHC’s Fallout series:
As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan draw to a close, the Interdisciplinary
Humanities Center will consider, from the perspective of the humanities, the impact
of war upon individuals, cultures, institutions and societies. Throughout the 201213 academic year, scholars, public intellectuals, journalists and social workers will
explore topics such as the psychological and social challenges confronting veterans
and their communities, the diverse narratives and commentaries that circulate
about war, the place of war in the social imaginary, and the manifold forms of
human aggression. Art installations, film screenings, creative performances and
literary readings will give voice to the experiences of those whose lives have been
