Welcome to our new members
The committee is pleased to welcome six new
members to the branch team after a recent
networking event at the Thistle Hotel. New
members to the group hope their skills will benefit
Gloucestershire marketers by sharing their
knowledge and shaping future events to meet the
needs of the current CIM membership.

committee with over 20
years’ marketing
experience gained
primarily within B2B IT and

The primary motivation for Kevin to join the
committee was to support the team in place and
build on the successes to date. He is particularly
eager to see a more diverse range of events for
members (both in terms of subject areas and
delivery formats) and felt the best way to have a
voice was to join the group. Kevin hopes his
passion for marketing together with an
approachable and enthusiastic attitude will
complement the team already working hard for the
region.

Introducing your CIM
Gloucestershire Branch
The newly released 2011 CIM member survey
shows that, as members, we expect more
knowledge and resources from the CIM. Your local
CIM Gloucestershire branch offers you value-formoney events and short training courses for a
fraction of the price of an externally-sourced
equivalent training programme. We can bring in
marketing specialists and arrange company visits to
experience first-hand how our peers deliver their
integrated marketing strategies and give us the
opportunity to explore alternatives styles and
approaches. We also cater for a range of levels
from very senior marketers, to those just starting out
on their CIM journey.
We are keen to develop the branch, expand our
engagement with fellow CIM members and offer you
the most relevant and exciting programmes we can.
But we are a group of volunteers. We do not get
paid for our time so we very much need the support
of you, our members, to input your thoughts and
help us to deliver a variety of engaging and dynamic
events. As you can see from the earlier story, the
branch is a medley of new and experienced
members, representing a range of different
sectors/marketing specialisms and we are
dedicated to shaping the future of the branch and its
offerings. We’ll be sharing our news and upcoming
events more widely via social media, watch out for
the new links over the forthcoming weeks and we
hope you’ll help to disseminate this information on
our behalf. And don’t forget, you’re welcome to
bring guests to our events! Alternatively, drop a line

Negotiating skills for marketers
Gloucestershire branch held a Negotiating Skills
workshop over two evenings in February at the
Holiday Inn, Barnwood, Gloucester. The learn local
event attracted 10 enthusiastic students from a
variety of marketing backgrounds and was tutored
by ‘Mac’ Mackay, DipM MCIM MBA who has many
years’ experience in blue-chip organisations.
Negotiation strategies are essential for every
business person to enable them to reach
agreements with staff, colleagues, internal and
external customers/suppliers each with their point of
view. This workshop explored strategies for
reaching a gain:gain framework in a lively and
interactive style.
Students agreed that the knowledge gained through
the workshop could be applied to various
environments from work, home, and leisure through
to major purchases such as a house or car. An
enjoyable part of the workshop included role play
sessions with the students placed into opposing
groups to negotiate the best outcome for the
scenario they were given. Group discussions
further enhanced the workshop and helped
delegates to understand the various views of their
peers. At the end of the tasks the different
members of the group were asked to discuss what
strategies they used for resolving any conflict and
whether they did or did not get what they wanted.
