Dr. Jesse T. Airaudi presented a paper entitled “Practically Picasso: The ‘New Student
Epistemology’ and Artwork in the Literature Classroom,” in the College English
Association section at the 2009 SCMLA Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on
October 30.

Adrienne Akins had an article, “Saving Face: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Corporate
Downsizing in Death of a Salesman,” accepted for publication in The Arthur Miller
Journal.

Danielle Williams presented a paper entitled “The Mystery of Creation in the Poetry of
Elizabeth Jennings” at the Southwest Conference on Christianity and Literature in
Houston, Texas.

Laura Bedwell’s article “Pear’s Biblical Paraphrase” has been accepted for publication
by Medieval Perspectives, the proceedings journal for the Southeastern Medieval
Association. At the SEMA conference last week, this paper was named the outstanding
graduate student paper for Medieval Perspectives 24.

Jeffrey Bilbro’s article “From Violence to Silence: The Rhetorical Means and Ends of
Thomas Merton's Antipoetry” has been accepted for publication in The Merton Annual:
Studies in Culture, Spirituality and Social Concerns.

CONFERENCES-CALLS FOR PAPERS
Information has been received from Blue Mesa Review concerning their annual fiction
contest. Along with having the submission published in Blue Mesa Review, the winner
will also receive $1,000. Submissions should be limited to 7,000 words, and a $15 check
payable to UNM-BMR should be included. Submissions must be postmarked by

Information has been received from Mosaic concerning submissions for a special issue on
the poetry-philosophy relation. Submissions should be at least 7,000 words, including
Works Cited and notes. Provide a 50-word abstract and a list of Works Cited, as well.
The essay, abstract and Works Cited should be submitted on CD, floppy or electronically,
in Microsoft Word, along with three paper copies with page numbers. Enclose a signed
cover letter stating that the essay is not part of a thesis or dissertation, has not been
previously published, and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Please send
