For this reason it is recommended that this unit standard not be used as a prerequisite for any other unit standard or as a compulsory component of a course. 2 Definitions Heritage – matters from the past which have ongoing and special importance for oneself in the present. Culture and cultural – pertaining to a group’s commonly held and evolving set of practices, beliefs, and values that influence individual members’ perception of the world. A people – a group that is definable in terms of generally shared characteristics, which may include race, origin, language, culture, and social relationships. 3 Attention is drawn to the following unit standard which may complement or provide an alternative to, this unit standard: Unit 4247, Describe general characteristics of peoples in New Zealand. 4 The following legislation and subsequent amendments provide reference, where needed, for this unit standard: Privacy Act 1993. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe aspects of lineage and heritage in relation to self. Evidence requirements 1.1 Description identifies own traceable lineage to at least three generations. Range 1.3 12352 version 6 Page 2 of 3 factor may include but is not limited to one of – a belief, a loyalty, a socio-economic factor, an educational factor, a pattern or event, a vocational factor, health. Description identifies an event, at least ten years before one’s birth, that has impact in the present, and identifies the effect of the event on self. Range event may include but is not limited to one of – cultural, social, economic, political, technological, emotional, physical. Outcome 2 Describe aspects of cultural identity in relation to self. Evidence requirements 2.1 Description identifies own connections to a people or peoples to which one is related by ‘blood’ and/or to a group in society that shares a common cultural bond. 2.2 Description identifies three cultural characteristics that are general to one’s own cultural identity in terms of their application to self. 2.3 Description provides two examples that illustrate the expression of one’s own cultural identity.
