Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to describe
aspects of lineage, heritage, and cultural identity in relation to
self.

1
Content related to this unit standard may be of a highly personal nature. It is advised
that full and clear consent of people is obtained before they participate in any
associated learning and/or assessment. For this reason it is recommended that this
unit standard not be used as a prerequisite for any other unit standard or as a
compulsory component of a course.

Definitions
Heritage – matters from the past which have ongoing and special importance for
oneself in the present.
Culture and cultural – pertaining to a group’s commonly held and evolving set of
practices, beliefs, and values that influence individual members’ perception of the
world.
A people – a group that is definable in terms of generally shared characteristics,
which may include race, origin, language, culture, and social relationships.

Outcome 1
Describe aspects of lineage and heritage in relation to self.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Description identifies own traceable lineage to at least three generations.

Description identifies a factor in family history that has a current impact and
describes the impact on self.

Description identifies an event, at least ten years before one’s birth, that has
impact in the present, and identifies the effect of the event on self.

economic, political, technological, emotional, physical.
Outcome 2
Describe aspects of cultural identity in relation to self.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Description identifies own connections to a people or peoples to which one is
related by ‘blood’ and/or to a group in society that shares a common cultural
bond.
2.2
Description identifies three cultural characteristics that are general to one’s own
cultural identity in terms of their application to self.
2.3
Description provides two examples that illustrate the expression of one’s own
cultural identity.
Range
examples may include but are not limited to – recreation, artistic
expression, celebrations, food.
