THE ETHNIC MINORITY COMMITTEE OF THE HARRISBURG EDUCATION ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES THE CAROLYN LAROSE HENRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD FOR HARRISBURG HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES $1000 SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED FOR: (1) HARRISBURG HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SENIOR (2) ATTENDING HARRISBURG AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE (3) WITH A 2.5 OR HIGHER CUMULATIVE AVERAGE CAROLYN LAROSE HENRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is an award dedicated to the memory of Carolyn L. Henry. Carolyn was a resident of Harrisburg and graduated from William Penn High School in 1971. Understanding the importance of education, she attended and graduated from Bloomsburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She obtained a Reading Specialist Certification from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Education in Adult Organization Development/Training and Design from Temple University. Carolyn L. Henry dedicated 33 years to Harrisburg School District as an Elementary, Middle and High school classroom teacher, GED Director and Literacy Coach. She was chairperson of the Reading is Fundamental Program (RIF) and instituted the first Teen Book Club and the Brown Bag Poetry Club for Harrisburg High School students. Carolyn L. Henry dedicated her leadership and expertise to improve reading literacy by writing numerous grants to fund reading programs and literacy initiatives thus improving student learning proficiency and adult learning. In 2009 Carolyn was honored by the Harrisburg Public School Foundation as Teacher of the Year and the John Harris High School Library was dedicated in her honor. Carolyn was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Harrisburg Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association, Ethnic Minority Committee , Capital Reading Council, International Reading Association, Pennsylvania Teachers of Reading and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Each year 1 scholarship will be awarded to a Harrisburg High student planning on matriculating at Harrisburg Area Community College. The recipient must express a strong desire to pursue higher education, attain academic excellence and to perform community service. In doing so, each scholarship recipient mirrors Carolyn L. Henry’s belief for, EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. Students interested in applying for the scholarship must provide the following information to the scholarship committee by April 5, 2013. - A completed scholarship application & checklist (attached). A one-page biography with color photo (non digital, passport size). Two letters of recommendation: from a teacher, counselor or school administrator and one from the following; employer, minister or community leader…but not from a relative or close friend. An official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript with official seal (9th-12th). A 900 - 1000 word typewritten essay. The topic: What are your dreams of the future? When you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What people, things, and accomplishments do you need? How does this particular scholarship fit into your plans for the future? CONDITIONS… 1. All applicants must be a graduation senior with a 2.5 or higher cumulative average. 2. Applications must be received on or before April 5, 2013. 3. All official transcripts must be sealed. 4. An original written or typed essay must accompany this application. 5. Send your HACC acceptance letter to the Scholarship Chairperson. 6. No relative of the Ethnic Minority Executive Committee may apply. 7. In order to qualify for this scholarship, an applicant must enroll as a full time student. ACCEPTANCE PROCESS 1. Please send a notice of your HACC acceptance to the EMC chairperson. 2. Award recipients are selected by the EMC Scholarship Committee and announced at the Senior Class Recognition Ceremony held in May or June of each year. 3. One scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1000. 4. The recipient will receive a reply regarding the award by mail 5. Scholarship recipient(s) must accept scholarship award in person or by designated proxy. 6.
