SELECTED HEADLINES
1) * Nanotechnology news in brief *
See http://nanotechweb.org/articles/news/6/2/10?alert=1
2) * Nano-snow clusters improve coupling efficiency * Nano-sized snow crystals could be an
interesting candidate for boosting the coupling efficiency of high intensity laser energy into matter,
say researchers in Israel. The team from the Racah Institute of Physics (RIOP) and the Soreq
Research Center has discovered that sapphire targets coated with snow absorb more than 95%
of the incident light compared with a figure of around 50% for the bare substrate.

3) * Thermal tweezers make their debut * Random Brownian forces could be used to trap and
manipulate nanoparticles on surfaces in the presence of laser radiation, according to calculations
by optical physicists in Australia. This is a surprising result since Brownian forces are usually
detrimental for optically trapping particles smaller than 100 nm. The "thermal tweezers" could be
used in nanofabrication techniques with nanoscale resolution, as well as in imaging and rewritable surface memory elements.

4) * Nanocapsules target tumours *
Researchers in Korea have devised a simple way to make polymer nanocapsules that could be
used for drug delivery and other applications. The breakthrough method overcomes some of the
problems with existing techniques that are time-consuming and require pre-organized templates
to make hollow nanospheres.

5) * Mount Etna produces catalyst for nanocarbons * Researchers in Germany have shown that
volcanic lava can be used as an efficient catalyst in the first step for producing carbon nanotubes
and nanofibres. The result is not as surprising as it might seem: volcano lava rock is extremely
porous and naturally contains large quantities of iron oxide particles – just what is needed to
synthesize carbon nanomaterials.

6) * Quantum dot nanowire emits light *
Researchers in the Netherlands have made the first single quantum dot nanowire light emitting
diode. The result, which comes from a team at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience in Delft and
Philips Research Labs in Eindhoven, opens the way for fabricating optoelectronic nanodevices
based on single nanowires. Here, single electron transport could be combined with single photon
optics – a long sought-after goal in optoelectronics.

7) * "Tighter controls" for nanotechnology * A report from the United Nations (UN) has called for
tighter regulation on nanotechnology, which is already being used to develop drugs, cosmetics
and other commercial products. In its annual report of the global environment, the UN's
Environment Programme (UNEP) said that "swift action" was needed by policy makers to
properly evaluate nanotechnology.
