Mr Krishnaswamy stated that India has a large advantage over other countries in terms of increasing percentage of the working population. And also emphasized that there needs to be an effort to channelize this young population to productive sectors like manufacturing. If we do not convert this opportunity into action it will create a bigger problem for India. India needs to focus on the following points to achieve overall growth in manufacturing: 1. Frugal technology- use of high end technology is the need of the hour and how the concept of frugal Manufacturing can be used to achieve zero wastage. Every action that we do has to create value or it will lead to inefficient economy. 2. Engage Institutions and Academia so that graduates coming out of the Institutions are employable. 3. This has been made possible with: Technological advancement and metallurgical up gradation Improvement in plant monitoring & its control, plant safety by trip & interlocks through Distributed Control System Coupled with advance Emergency Shutdown System (ESDS) Advance Process Controller (APC) for process parameter optimization Excellent Plant operation & maintenance practices Complexity of plant operation and maintenance has increased significantly Need more qualified and skilled people to run and maintain the plant safely Energy and feedstock cost is increasing day by day Being single stream plant, the business impact is high due to any plant interruption / stoppage Improve the business profitability on sustainable basis Process hazard has increased due to high hold up volumes of process fluids at any point of operation due to large single stream plant Environment regulations are becoming more and more stringent everyday Key Challenges to run these single stream large capacity continuous operation modern plants efficiently and safely are Maintaining Plant Reliability and Integrity Ensuring Competent and Skilled work force Ensuring high standard of Health , Safety and Environment Way to overcome challenges: • • • • • • Use of innovation in plant maintenance and reliability Improving the maintainability, productivity and easiness in equipment maintenance by improvement at equipment design level Improving the cycle time of plant turn around and enhancing the time span to four years between two schedule plant turn around Use of continual improvement tools like Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Reducing the human skill dependency in plant maintenance by use of mechanisation and technology Use of various interactive training modules for fast and effective skill building The speech was followed by an intensive Q&A session. All the sessions where highly appreciated by the audience.
