SECTION I: READING HEALTH RELATED ISSUES
1-1 READING
Cosmetic surgery is performed to change a person’s appearance in order
to a more desirable look. Cosmetic surgery is different from plastic
surgery. Plastic surgery is carried out to repair the damaged skin and
tissue following the injury or illness. It also provides reconstructive
surgery after major injuries or cancer removal operations. In 2010, 90%
of the cosmetic surgery procedures were performed for women. The most
popular procedures included breast surgery, facial surgery, and body
surgery. Moreover, non-surgical cosmetic treatments are procedures that
change a person’s appearance without using surgery. They include
muscle paralysis, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and non-surgical laser
and intense light treatments. Muscle paralysis is a procedure that
injections of botulinum toxin are used to help relax facial muscles and
make lines and wrinkles less obvious. Dermal fillers are injected into
wrinkles or creases to fill them out. Chemical peels use chemicals to
remove the outer layers of skin cells and make the skin look good.
Non-surgical laser and intense light treatments are often used for hair
removal.
