Court Information: The Pasadena Municipal Court is open and continues its normal operations for those people who are able to appear. Persons who are unable to appear in court because of difficulties related to Hurricane Ike may reschedule their court appearance in person within a reasonable time (generally 30 days) without penalty. Curfew: A curfew remains in effect between the hours of 10P.M. until 6 A.M. until further notice. A person shall not remain or travel upon any public or private property within Pasadena city limits between these times. This order does not apply to fuel trucks, supply trucks and other vehicles assisting with the recovery. Truck loading racks should remain open at all hours. Debris Removal: For debris removal, residents should move materials from damaged buildings, as well as tree limbs and other vegetative matter to curbside for pickup. Keep building materials separate from tree limbs and vegetative storm debris, and separate both those from normal household garbage. Contractors are working with City to speed the debris removal process with scores of trucks soon to be on our streets. Debris haulers are not allowed to remove debris from resident's property. Debris must be placed on the right of way for pick up, between the edge of residence's property line, a sidewalk, or ditch and the street. Citizens must avoid open burning of storm and tree debris created from Hurricane Ike. This includes tree branches and wooden fences. Also, residents are urged to be extremely cautious around debris and other storm hazards because of the increased risk of exposure to tetanus. Individuals can be exposed to tetanus through the soil, structural debris (especially nails), and human and animal waste. Dialysis Information: Kidney dialysis patients affected by Hurricane Ike can call (866) 407-3773 to locate dialysis services. FEMA Information: Housing Assistance: FEMA has made federal disaster assistance available including rental payments for up to three months for homeowners and at least one month for renters. Persons who need assistance should register at www.fema.gov or at 1-800-621FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585. Hotel Lodging: For those eligible Ike evacuees from Texas who cannot return to their homes and have Internet access available, a list of local FEMA participating hotels may be found at http://femaindex.pasadenatexas.net/ Reimbursement: For FEMA reimbursement assistance due to storm damage losses, call 1-800-621- FEMA. Be sure to save any receipts for purchases that are directly related to expenses incurred due to Hurricane Ike. Vouchers: FEMA is not handing out vouchers today at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This report by a local radio station is incorrect. FEMA assistance can be obtained by calling 1-800-621-3362 or registering online at www.fema.gov. Highway Closures: Currently closed highways include: SH 87 eastbound and westbound from Bolivar Ferry Landing to SH 124; closed due significant damage IH 45-Gulf Freeway south of FM 519 is closed to the general public. DPS has staged a checkpoint for credential review to continue southbound. A dedicated lane has been established for emergency responders and essential employees; including state and federal resources, utility providers, active contractors and commodity deliveries. FM 3005/Seawall Blvd from 61st Street to FM 332 is closed to the general public. Local law enforcement is performing credential inspection and only emergency responders, essential personnel and residents with proof of local residency are being allowed to proceed to cross over the Galveston Causeway. SH 6 eastbound from FM 519 to IH 45 is closed to the general public. DPS is performing credential inspection and only emergency responders and essential personnel are being allowed to proceed. . The Lynchburg Ferry and the Washburn Tunnel remain closed due to the effects of Hurricane Ike. Both the Ferry and the Tunnel will likely remain closed for another week. The tunnel suffered damage when the pumps could not handle the massive storm surge from the ship channel. The ferries suffered damage as a result of being forced by tidal surge upon the pilings to which they were moored. Library Both branches of the Pasadena Public Library are closed until further notice. Madison Jobe Senior Center The Madison Jobe Senior Center is closed indefinitely. Programming may be relocated to another city facility in the upcoming weeks. Mobile Communications Center, where Phone & Internet are provided: A mobile congressional office is located at American Legion Post 490, across from Ellington Field, open from 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM. Here residents will be able to report claims of hurricane damage with FEMA, request loans from the Small Business Administration, and begin the process of receiving funds to repair damage. This truck will provide 225 laptop computers with internet connectivity and 225 cell phones. This center will help the many victims of Hurricane Ike who are being told to call or go online to register claims, but this is impossible for many because power is not available. Pasadena Animal Shelter: The Pasadena Animal Shelter is currently operating under normal business hours. People can view the shelter’s animals from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. On Wednesdays, the shelter stays open later, until 5:45. The shelter is also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon. The shelter also puts pictures of all shelter animals online, at www.petharbor.com Due to power outages that were just resolved, the shelter is slightly behind in keeping these pictures up-to-date, but is working diligently to photograph each animal. Pet Hotline: In support of the Hurricane Ike emergency response, the Houston SPCA has launched the Animal Rescue line to report lost or found animals and to report animal related information. The Animal Rescue line will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in the following days. The Pet Hotline phone number is 713-861-0161. Phone and Internet Access: More than 200 phones and laptop computers are available for resident use at the mobile congressional office, which is located at American Legion Post 490 (across from Ellington Field). The office is open from 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM. POD Information: Currently, a Point of Distribution (POD) is open in Pasadena at Memorial Stadium. The POD is averaging 500-600 cars per hour. Power Outage Information: A majority of Centerpoint Energy’s Pasadena customers are part of the 1.4 million customers still without power in metro Houston area. Crews are working hard to restore power, and the number of outages has decreased steadily every day. The latest numbers from Centerpoint Energy (released at 8 a.m. on 9/18/08) indicate that approximately 37,185 homes and businesses in Pasadena are without power. Evacuees who are in a special medical needs or a general population shelter and have prescription insurance can receive a 7-day supply necessary medication, and the state will pay the co-pay amount for that prescription, but it must be filled at HEB or Walgreens. Hurricane Ike evacuees from a declared disaster location and who have no prescription insurance coverage who need prescriptions filled for medications or durable medical equipment are eligible for the Emergency Prescription Assistance Program, and can receive a 30-day supply of any needed medications. Recreation Facilities and Programming: All Parks & Recreation programming and activities that were scheduled to take place at City recreation centers has been canceled for the next two weeks. Programming and activities scheduled for the Madison Jobe Senior Center has been suspended indefinitely. Salvation Army: A Salvation Army hot meal truck is located at Pasadena Community Center, 2732 Cherrybrook Lane, serving food from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. School Closings: Pasadena ISD classes are cancelled until further notification, with school cancelled at least for the remainder of this week (through Friday, September 19). Deer Park ISD classes are also cancelled at least through Friday, September 19. Shelters: Red Cross shelters have been established at the following locations: Richey Street Baptist Church, 1010 Richey St. for shelter, and Peace Lutheran Church (capacity: 75 people), 6435 Fairmont for shelter and food. Unemployment Benefits: Texans whose jobs were lost or interrupted because of Hurricane Ike are eligible for special disaster unemployment assistance through the Texas Workforce Commission, which is providing disaster-related unemployment benefits to those who are eligible. The benefits range from a minimum of $57 a week to a maximum of $378 a week depending on a worker's past earning history. Individuals who are self-employed also may be eligible for these disaster-related unemployment benefits. Applications must be filed by Oct. 15. Disaster unemployment payments are available to those who: were working or were self-employed or who were scheduled to begin work or self-employment; can no longer work or perform services because of hurricane damage to the workplace; can establish that their work or self-employment was their primary source of income; don't qualify for regular jobless benefits from another state; can't work because of an hurricane injury; became the breadwinner or major supporter of a family because the head of the household died. To file for benefits, individuals need their Social Security number, a copy of their most recent federal income tax forms or check stubs, and documentation supporting they were working or self-employed at the time of the hurricane. Please keep these tips in mind as you begin to use tap water again: Flush your water service line and household plumbing by running each faucet until you notice a change in water temperature, typically no more than 5 minutes.
