Research groups should include at least the following sections in each
laboratory-specific SOP.
Section 1 - Process
List the process or type of process that involves the use of hazardous chemicals in the
laboratory. The process may be described in generic terms such as "synthesis" or
"extraction" or in more detailed terms such as "atomic absorption spectroscopy for
heavy metals." Also, list any unique equipment used in the process. If the term
"process" does not apply, proceed to Section 2.
Section 2 - Hazardous Chemicals Involved
List the hazardous chemicals (or class of chemicals) involved, including any hazardous
products or by-products. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for each reagent should
be on hand. Most materials are available through the MSDS page on this web site.
Section 3 - Potential Hazards
Describe the potential dangers for each hazardous operation or chemical. Include
physical, health, and environmental risks.
Section 4 - Approvals Required
List the circumstances under which a particular laboratory operation, procedure, or
activity will require prior approval from the Principal Investigator (PI), laboratory
supervisor, or other personnel.
Section 5 - Designated Area
Consider establishing a designated area for this operation within your laboratory. A
fume hood, portion of the laboratory, or the entire laboratory may be the designated
area.
Section 6 - Special Handling Procedures and Storage Requirements
List any special storage requirements for the chemicals. Describe any access
restrictions, ventilation requirements, temperature controls, chemical incompatibilities,
or special containment devices. Also, describe safe methods to transport the chemicals.
Section 7 - Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
List the PPE and hygiene practices required for each activity or chemical. PPE includes
gloves, laboratory coats, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, and respirators. If
applicable, indicate the type of PPE (gloves, splash protection) needed for each phase
of a process. If you think you need help with PPE selection or that your process may
require respirator use, contact EH&S (642-3073) for an assessment.
Section 8 - Engineering/Ventilation Controls
Describe any engineering controls used to reduce exposures to the hazardous
chemicals. These can include chemical fume hoods, aerosol suppression devices, and
general ventilation systems.
Section 9 - Spill and Accident Procedures
Indicate how spills and accidental releases should be handled. List emergency
procedures and the location of appropriate emergency equipment. Also, note any
special procedures for dealing with potential personal exposures, in the event of a spill
or release, and any emergency contacts.
Section 10 - Waste Disposal
Describe any unique waste disposal procedures for the chemicals.
Section 11 - Decontamination
Discuss any appropriate decontamination procedures for equipment, glassware, and
clothing. Where applicable, include controlled areas (e.g., fume hoods, glove boxes) in
the text.

Once the SOP is finalized, be sure to provide documented training on the SOP to all
affected personnel.
