Science Technology Engineering & Math Scholarship (S-STEM) S-STEM SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION & GUIDELINES PURPOSE This scholarship is intended to develop Native American environmental scientists at Northwest Indian College through the pursuit of the Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in Native Environmental Science or the Bachelor of Science Degree in Native Environmental Science (including the four-year and transfer alternatives in both program options). It also may be awarded to students pursuing the Associate of Science - Transfer Degree in Life Sciences who may be interested in pursuing careers in marine biology, health sciences, natural resources or other science-based fields. The amount of the award may vary depending upon the number of successful applicants selected to receive this scholarship. ELIGIBILITY Recipients of this scholarship must … 1. Be citizens of the United States, Nationals of the United States (as defined in Section 101 (a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), aliens admitted as refugees under Section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or aliens lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence; 2. Be enrolled full-time in college-level courses that contribute toward fulfilling requirements for a science degree at Northwest Indian College, either the A.A.S. in Native Environmental Science, the B.S. in Native Environmental Science or the A.S.T. in Life Sciences. Enrollment must be full-time for each quarter a student receives a scholarship; 3. Demonstrate academic potential or ability; and 4. Demonstrate financial need, defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education rules for need-based Federal financial aid. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must … 1) Submit high school transcripts or college transcripts where applicable. Incoming freshmen must submit high school transcripts indicating a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Students who have completed at least one quarter of college work must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for college work completed. NWIC students may submit unofficial transcripts. 2) Submit an original 500-word essay of academic and/or professional goals. 3) Submit two (2) letters of recommendation that … a) Are from non-related persons who indicate their relationship to you and who provide information regarding details of your academic and professional background and goals, as well as your personal and character attributes, b) Include complete return addresses and other contact information where appropriate for each referee (author), and c) Are signed by the referees. 4) Be enrolled for and complete a minimum of 12 credits each quarter and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to maintain eligibility. 5) Submit complete applications (including the last page of this document) to the Financial Aid Office of Northwest Indian College by the SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 5:00 pm on May 15, 2015.
