Chemical Reaction Lab November 4, 2015 - Page 67 Chemical reactions take place all around you and even in your body. One way to tell if a chemical change has taken place is to see is to carefully observe substances around you. When two substances combine in a chemical reaction, they form a new product that may have very different properties than the original substances. As you work, you will carefully observe some chemical reactions. For each one, please list which of the four signs of chemical reactions you see, and whether you think the reaction is endothermic or exothermic. Safety Tip: Always wear goggles when doing chemical reactions. Reaction #1 1. Put 5 g of epsom salts into a baggie 2. Add 10 ml of ammonia solution. Close the bag tightly. 3. Feel the baggie with your hands as the reaction is taking place. 4. Let the baggie sit while you do the other reactions. Then look at the baggie again. Reaction #2 1. Place a piece of liver into a baggie. 2. Add 10 ml of hydrogen peroxide to the baggie. Close it tightly. 3. Feel the baggie with your hands as the reaction is taking place. You can even hold it up to your ear and listen to the reaction. 4. Let the baggie sit until you are done with all the other reactions. Then look at the baggie again. Reaction #3 1. Put five grams of baking soda into a baggie. 2. Add 10 ml of cabbage juice and 10 ml of vinegar into the baggie. Close it tightly. 3. Feel the baggie with your hands as the reaction is taking place. 4. Let the baggie sit until you are done with all the other reactions. Then look at the baggie again. Reaction #4 (You can keep the baggie when you're done with this reaction.) 1. Put 1 teaspoon of borax and 75 ml of water in a cup. Stir well 2. Put 1 teaspoon of glue, 5 drops of your favorite food coloring, and 10 ml of water into your baggie. 3. Now put 30 ml of your borax solution into the baggie. Observe what happens. Homework tonight: Using your recorded information, fill in the table on the back.
