COURSE OVERVIEW
There have been many changes in the regulations around the delivery of naturopathic intravenous infusion
therapy or IVIT. CONO has developed standards and regulations involving the delivery of IVIT and the facility
requirements which will impact all NDs providing IVIT. CONO will be deploying a robust inspection program
ensuring naturopathic doctors in Ontario meet the highest standard for safe IVIT practice. This lecture will
review these changes and provide resources that NDs can use immediately to ensure they are compliant with
all new regulations.
Topics will include:
Physical standards for your clinic – reviewing the details/needs for functionally distinct rooms involved in the
preparation and delivery of IVIT
Clinic emergency preparedness – review how to complete a clinic risk assessment, based on this review how to
develop clinic procedures to mitigate risks, and provide templates of emergency/incidence procedures and
reports.
Infection control – provide information on the latest provincial standards in infection control and templates for
clinic policies on infection control.
Compounding – review new guidelines on sterile compounding including a summary of USP 797 and how it
applies to naturopathic practice. Requirements for laminar flow hood use and layout of a clinic compounding
area will be discussed. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice sterile compounding in a flow
hood to ensure they understand the concepts of sterile compounding into practice
Monitoring and Reporting – review the requirements for ADR tracking, reporting to CONO, and monitoring.
Documentation – review standards for documentation and common pitfalls with patient care documentation.
Delegation – review the new delegation standard and what is required to give and receive delegation for
intravenous therapy.
Quality assurance – understand the need for a Quality management committee and what internal quality
assurance measures are needed in an IVIT practice.
