Summary of Activities and Future Plans
The research is concentrated on three subjects:
1. Ancient ship construction, based on underwater excavations and research of the
following shipwrecks: Ma’agan Mikhael Ship, Tantura A, Tantura B, Dor D, DW2,
2001/1, 2002/2, Tantura E, Tantura F, Akko 1 and Akko 2 and a few other
8
shipwrecks. In the future it is planned to continue the research of ship construction
based on underwater excavations.
2. Conservation of waterlogged organic material. The conservation of the Ma‘agan
Mikhael Ship, of which the main part lasted seven years, is an ongoing process,
which demands continuous monitoring, and unceasing treatment. Recently the major
task of reassembling the hull has been fulfilled, with only minor adjustments left.
Following the establishment of the conservation laboratory at the Leon Recanati
Institute for Maritime Studies, University of Haifa, it is planned to continue the
conservation of ship timbers that were retrieved from the seabed, and to extend the
research to conservation of ropes, leather, and small items using freeze dry.
3. Analysis of ancient voyages. This subject was studied in the past, and the intention is
to continue this research.
One of the main future programs is the building of a replica of the Ma‘agan Mikhael
ship. This will enable a comprehensive research of ancient ship construction, and
exploration of ancient seafaring.
