CARBOHYDRATES SELF-QUIZ
1. Take a look at the molecule above. How do you know it’s a carbohydrate?
The molecules I composed of rings that contain only C, H, and O in a 1:2:1 ratio.
2. Would you say the carbohydrate is a monomer or polymer?
This molecule is composed of three rings (or three individual monomers) so it is a
polymer.
3. Based on your response to question two, would you say the carbohydrate is a
monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide?
A monosaccharide contains 1 ring, a disaccharide contains 2, and a polysaccharide
contains 3 or more. This molecule has 3 rings so therefore it is a polysaccharide.
4. Which of the following examples best fits: glucose or maltose or starch?
Glucose is a monosaccharide. Maltose is a disaccharide. Starch is a polysaccharide.
Although starch would be much bigger than this 3 rings molecule, starch is the best
answer here.
5. Water was lost between each glucose molecule to form the starch molecule.
6. Glucose looks amazingly similar to fructose: only the pattern of atoms differs.
What is the name given to this molecular variation? Glucose, fructose and galactose all
have the same chemical formula, but their atoms are arranged differently. Therefore
they are isomers.
