A great many people have been involved over many years in compiling the
information that is presented by this project.
Over the past few decades information on specific natural areas on the Swan
Coastal Plain has been compiled through a series of programs such as System
6 (DCE 1983), the Southern Swan Coastal Plain Survey (Gibson et al. 1994),
System 6 Update (DEP 1996), Perth’s Bushplan (Government of Western
Australia 1998c to f) and Bush Forever (Government of Western Australia
2000a&b).
The Perth Region Plant Biodiversity Project itself was conceived and
implemented by Bronwen Keighery (DoE), Greg Keighery (CALM) and Karen
Clarke (WALGA) as a collaborative project between state and local government
with funding support from the federal government’s Natural Heritage Trust as
delivered through the Swan Catchment Council to the Perth Biodiversity Project
(PBP) based at WALGA. This funding provided the opportunity to further
develop, interpret and make easily accessible, existing information held by DoE
and CALM and complement existing projects by DoE, CALM, PBP and the
Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) (see Project Overview).
Five regional studies form the basis of the plot-based information presented:
DEP 1996 System 6 and Part System 1 Update Programme. Unpublished
bushland plot and area records. Department of Environmental Protection,
Perth, Western Australia.
Gibson N, Keighery BJ, Keighery GJ, Burbidge AH and Lyons MN 1994 A
Floristic Survey of the Southern Swan Coastal Plain. Unpublished Report for
the Australian Heritage Commission prepared by the Department of
Conservation and Land Management and the Conservation Council of Western
Australia (Inc.).
Griffin EA 1993 Flora of the Quindalup Dunes between the Swan and Irwin
Rivers, Western Australia. Unpublished report to the Coastal Planning Branch,
the Department of Planning and Urban Development and the Heritage Council
of WA, East Perth, Western Australia.
Keighery GJ 1996 Progress Report: Conservation Status of Vascular Flora of
the Southern Swan Coastal Plain. Unpublished Report to the Australian Nature
Conservation Agency, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.
Weston AS, Griffin EA and Trudgen M 1993 Flora and Vegetation
Conservation Values of the Ellenbrook Estate. Conducted for Bowman Bishaw
Gorham 1993.
These and a number of other plot-based records are contained in databases
being developed through DoE and CALM. The crucial key to these databases
is the taxonomic revision by Greg and Bronwen Keighery of the species
recorded in the original studies. Vanda Longman (CALM) has worked for many
years with Greg and Bronwen Keighery developing these databases and
meticulously recording each change.
A major output from these databases is currently in preparation for publication
as: Keighery GJ, Keighery BJ, Longman VM and Clarke KA 2006 (in prep.)
Native and Weed Flora of the Southern Swan Coastal Plain.
The other key person who has worked on this project is Erin Harris under
