Sugoroku activity
How to plan your board game
1.
Open and print or save the Sugoroku board game template.
2.
Put the word ‘start’ in Japanese スタート in the first box.
3.
Put the word ‘finish’ おわり or ‘goal’ ゴール in the final box.
4.
Choose some Japanese, either a word or phrases, to write in the remaining
boxes.
5.
Include a picture which gives the player a hint as to how to read and translate the
word.
6.
Write the numbers either as numerals or in kanji in the corner of each box so a
player knows where to start and finish.
Some ideas for language you may choose to include are:

greetings

classroom instructions

classroom language

places in Japan

any other language/words you know in Japanese.
Other points to note

Your teacher will direct whether they would like you to complete this activity on
the computer or by hand.

All of the writing should be in Japanese script; in other words, don’t use any
romaji.

Use a variety of words, phrases, hiragana, katakana and kanji to demonstrate
the breadth of your knowledge.

If you have prior knowledge of Japanese then you may like to include short
sentences to further demonstrate your knowledge.

You may include more boxes if you have more information than the number of
boxes in the template; however, check with your teacher prior to doing this.

How to play

The aim is to get to the end of the board game with the most points.

Determine how you will play, in teams or individually.

Decide on who will begin.

Roll the dice to determine the number of squares a player moves.

おやすみ means rest, and is a rest square with no question and no points.
Scoring system

player saying the correct Japanese and English without assistance – 10 points

player saying the correct Japanese and English with team/assistance – 5 points

player saying the correct Japanese only (no English translation) – 5 points

player saying the correct English translation only (no Japanese) without
assistance – 6 points

player saying the correct English with assistance – 3 points
The first player/team with the most points when the first person is finished is
the winner.
