Maintaining J-1 Status

Welcome to Dickinson College as a J-1 Exchange Visitor! We are happy to have you
here and we hope that your time at Dickinson College will fulfill the purpose of the
Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961: “to increase mutual
understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries
by means of educational and cultural exchanges” [Public Law 87-256, as amended, 22 U.S.C. § 2451.
et seq.]; C.F.R. § 62.1 (a).
This handout is designed to guide you during your time at Dickinson. It is by no means
exhaustive and you are encouraged to contact the Coordinator for International Student
and Scholar Services whenever you have questions about maintaining your J-1 Professor
status.
To maintain J-1 status, the Exchange Visitor MUST:
· Maintain the required documentation
· a valid DS-2019
· a valid passport
· an I-94 card marked “D/S” for “duration of status”
· Engage in appropriate activities
· Federal Regulations classify a J-1 Professor as “an individual
primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at postsecondary accredited educational institutions, museums, libraries, or
similar types of institutions. A professor may also conduct research,
unless disallowed by the sponsor” [22 C.F.R. § 62.4 (e)]
· Be employed only with authorization
· Carry Health Insurance as required by Federal Regulations
· Report any change of address to the Coordinator for International
Student and Scholar Services within 10 days of address change
