Project plan – Mission Patch
David Grigor
For subjects: Art, Technology, Science (Physics) and Maths.
For Lower Secondary school (Space Academy)
Designing a Mission Patch.
Aims:
 Draw together the main features of the Mission e.g. Shuttle name,
number and names of crew and destination.
 Brainstorm a design for the patch- outer shape, the icons, the features
colours, and names.
 Understand how to simplify the design to make it effective.
 Understand and use some measuring methods to assemble the
graphics- fonts, shapes and symbols.
 Link Art and the design of the patch to Technology Design, Science
and Maths.
Objectives
 Understand the composition of the patch- combining pictures with text,
and pattern.
 Understanding of the relationship between each feature and how they
describe the event.
1. Mission Title
2. Vehicle used- Rocket, Space Shuttle name and/or number etc.
3. Destination
4. Astronaut names
5. Text, words, numbers and symbols to describe the mission.
6. Patterns to describe features of the mission or to give the image a ‘good
look’


Investigate the importance of the patch- its relevance as a team
emblem.
Understand how the patch is used by all involved to show the work
effort that has been achieved.
Planning:
 Activity 1- Design the shape of the patch- is it round, triangular, oblong?
How large will it be?- common size is 10cms diameter.
 Activity 2- Thumbnail sketches then draw the main vehicle usedRocket/Shuttle, Satellite?
 Activity 3- Thumbnail sketches then draw symbols connecting around
and to the image.
 Activity 4- Write the words of the missions and the names of the
astronauts.
 Activity 5- Colour in the design.


Activity 6- The patch picture can be turned into a textile craft like: batik
or embroidery stitched patch.
Activity 7- Other option are to paint the design, cut it out and fasten it to
your top with a safety pin or tape.
Possible questions to ask:
o What is so unique about a mission patch?
o Why are mission patches so useful and so important?
o What would you feel if you wore a mission patch?
o What do you think is the most interesting part of the craft of
making a mission patch?
o How would you describe the benefit of a mission patch?
Resources:
 Drawing pencils, pens, template card, scissors.
 Look at books on the patches, posters, NASA website.
