copied from William VanCleve's Bible (in 1972 owned by Gilbert VanCleve of Olney, IL): “George W.
Callaway was born near Guyandot, VA. Oct. 4, 1810. He was married in 1829 to Keziah Ray. He
removed with his family to Edgar Co, Illinois in 1832. From this place he started in 1837 to Missouri, but
got no further than Jersey Co, Illinois where his wife and three children died. On April 29, 1838 he was
married to Elizabeth Ann Smith who survives him. During his stay in Edgar County he was converted
under the labors of Rev. P. N. Maurer (?) and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. About the year
1848 he received license as a local preacher. In 1850 he removed from Jersey County [IL] to Macoupin
County [IL]. He was ordained as a local deacon at Belleville, Illinois in 1864 by Bishop Janes. In 1884 he
went with his family to Redfield [Bourbon Co], Kansas where he lived five years returning at the end of
that time to Macoupin County [IL]. He died at the residence of his son, James L. Callaway on February 7,
1893, aged 82 years 4 months and 3 days. He leaves to mourn him the companion of more than 50 years of

years [ca 1880's); record of 1st marriage found in Cabell Co, WV Book 1, page 37. In 1850 census his
mother-in-law, Nancy Ann Shaw Smith, aged 60 (born MD), was living with them. In 1850 so was Jacob
Compton, aged 22, a farmer from OH. In 1860 census (Macoupin Co, IL) his mother-in-law Nancy [age
73] was still with them. So were farmers: John Reathford, age 19 from Scotland; Thomas Clark, aged 24
from VA' Alexander Wood, aged 19 from OH. From Gilbert Theodore "Gig" VanCleve's Bible: “Local
Preachers Licenses certifies that George W. Calaway - examination covering his gifts, grace and
usefullness and is suitable for a local preacher of this Methodist Church. License is renewed for Gillespie
Circuit in the Alton District June 18, 1864. - J. A. Scarrett.” Keziah died 2 weeks after the birth of her
5th daughter. She was possibly the daughter of Benjamin Ray; 4 of her 5 daughters died of Cholera.
George and Keziah applied for a marriage license in Cabell Co, WV - Book 1 page 42 - Feb 18, 1830 minister Stephen Spurlock. Elizabeth died aged 83 years 8 months 22 days of senility and dyspepsia
(calculates to b. Jan 2, 1820) Obituary possibly from the Carlinville Democrat or a religious publication copied from William VanCleve's Bible in 1972 (owned by Gilbert VanCleve of Olney, IL in 2006): “Mrs.
Elizabeth Callaway, widow of Rev. George Washington Callaway (local preacher) She died at the home of
her daughter Mrs. A. M. Burdsal in Gillespie, Illinois October 24, 1903. She was born in Portsmouth,
Ohio, Scioto County Feb. 2, 1820. She moved with her parents to Jersey Co., Illinois in 1933. In 1838 she
was united in marriage to G. W. Callaway who died in 1893. She was converted at the age of 13 and at the
age of 14 united with the United Methodist Episcopal Church. Her parents lived near the old Gillum Camp
Ground. It was there that she became acquainted with Peter Cartwright, Peter Akers and many other early
preachers of Illinois. Her husband built a house near Delhi where preaching services were held and a
church organized. It was at this time that Norman Allen - then a young minister conducted a revival of
religion in which about 70 persons were converted. Sister Callaway removed from this place to Macoupin
Co., Illinois in 1851. Again their home was opened for preaching until a schoolhouse was built. J. A.
Scarritt, one of the charter members of the southern Illinois Conference, preached some of his first services
in his house. This was the origin of Corrington Chapel Society, one of the best country churches. Sister
Callaway was the mother of 14 children, six of whom survive her. Among that number is the widow of
Rev. William VanCleve and she is the mother of J. W. VanCleve, D. D. and the Rev. Samuel VanCleve,

both of the Illinois conference. She was a woman of great piety, well informed and knew her Bible and
hymnbook well. Her mind was clear to the last and she often said, "I am only waiting for the Lord to call
me." Her prayer just before she died was "Now I lay me down to sleep." - E. Barnes Funeral service at
Hilyard Twp, Corrington Chapel, Macoupin Co, IL. In 1900 she was living with her son George.
Elizabeth's marriage permit signed April 18, 1838, permission was given by her brother Levi. George and
Elizabeth were married by Aaron Cox, JP; their marriage license was printed on green paper.

Co, IL. I have individual photos of Sarah and husband William VanCleve ca. their wedding – MVG Sarah
always planted Sweet Williams (the flower) beside her house for her husband and in his memory. A story
Sarah Ellen Callaway VanCleve told her grandchildren: A traveling seamstress came to the Callaway
house. One time while the children were playing in the storeroom the seamstress suddenly rose from
behind the kraut barrel. She had just given birth to a baby. The children were delighted. When she
finished her sewing she went away leaving the baby. Elizabeth Ann Smith Callaway raised the baby with
the rest of her children. {No mention of the child's name.} William's mother died when William was 2
years old so he was raised by his paternal grandparents, later by his older brothers; was a circuit preacher in
southern IL - Carmi, Mt. Carmel, Trenton, Olney, Clinton, Enfield, Clement, and Salem, IL. He fell in
love with the most beautiful woman around. I have individual photos of them on their wedding day - 25
Dec 1856. The spellings Gottreit, Gottright and Gottreight seem interchangeable. He was a large man who
weighed about 250 pounds; made one trip returning to New Jersey in 1876. He stayed 3 weeks with
relatives he hadn't seen in 20 years. All of his sons except Ed were named for clergymen; served as
minister in Staunton, IL area from Sep 21, 1880 until Oct 1, 1882; died at 12:40 P.M. Oct 12, 1899, a

Joseph W. Van Cleve was born in Macoupin C. Feb. 19, 1959. He secured his education at McKendree
College and entered the ministry in the southern IL Methodist conference in 1880. His first charge was at
Fairview. He remained in that conference for twenty-two years, filling some of the most important
pastorates. He was for five years at Mount Vernon and five years pastor of the Summit Avenue church in
East St. Louis. He also was stationed at Carmi, Olney and Effingham. He was a member of the general
conference in 1896 and on several later occasions. He was a member of the board of control of the
Epworth League after 1896. In 1902 he was pastor of the Methodist Church in Paris, Ill, coming from there
to Decatur in 1903. WORK AT DECATUR He became pastor of Grace Methodist church in September of
that year; and during the next five years his pastorate was marked with wonderful success. The
membership increased from 500 to 1200 and the present church building on North Main street, costing
$50,000 was built during his pastorate. In September 1908, he went to Champaign. In 1912 he was made
district superintendent, with headquarters in Decatur. He was a delegate to the general conference in
Minneapolis that year and was prominently mentioned as a candidate for resident bishop. In 1914 he
delivered an address at the national Methodist convention in Washington, D.C. On Oct. 28, 1914, he
delivered an address at the San Francisco exposition. In 1916, he was made general financial secretary of

In 1904, he was made grand chaplain of the Illinois grand lodge, A.F. and A.M. He was president of the
local Ministerial association and also president of the IL Inter-Church Federation at one time. He took a
deep interest in municipal and public affairs and was always recognized as a man of attainments and
ability. He always felt that the church was the greatest power for good in the community, and he never
hesitated to express from the pulpit publicly his sentiments on questions of public interest. He is survived
by his wife, three daughters and one son: Misses Luella and Ethel Van Cleve and Arthur T. Van Cleve of
Evanston and Joy Z., wife of attorney Edgar H. Allen of Decatur.” “THE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE,
August 12, 1926 Joseph W. Van Cleve, D.D. - A man who in his time was a large figure in denominational
life has recently slipped away, almost unnoticed. The Rev. J. W. Van Cleve, who died at Evanston, Ill.,
June 29, was the son of a Methodist preacher, William Van Cleve, and a graduate of McKendree College.
He was a minister in Southern IL Conference, 1880-1902, and later in IL Conference. Six times he was a
delegate to the General Conference ('96, '00, '08, '12, '16, '20), four times the leader of his delegation. He
was secretary of the old Committee on Finance, Centenary secretary of Chicago Area, a member of the
Epworth League Board of Control and the Board of Conference Claimants. He also served on the Joint
Commission on Unification. Dr. Van Cleve had a penetrative mind, a strong will, a wide knowledge of
denominational affairs. In every station he was a capable and devoted worker. He was married in 1882 to
Rachel A. Talley, who survives him, with a son, three daughters and two grandchildren.” Annis was Joe's
2nd choice for a wife. His first fiancée broke their engagement when Joe decided to become a minister
