Dual Credit – requesting transcripts You will need to request official transcripts from IPFW, Ivy Tech, and Trine University to take to the college you are attending if you took any dual credits over the course of your years at New Haven High School. The college will not accept the courses just written on a NHHS transcript. These should be available at the colleges during the first two weeks of June. The transcripts will be necessary to transfer these courses and give you the college credits so you do not need to take the classes again in college. LET”S TALK MONEY……… The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Now what…… If you filed the FAFSA by March 10th, 2015, AND have applied and been accepted to the colleges that you listed on your FAFSA, you will receive a Financial Aid Award letter. Most colleges post these to your son or daughter’s account on the college’s web portal. Your son or daughter needs to create an account in order to view it. Upon acceptance to the college they would have received directions to set up an account. Some colleges will send a written letter in the mail. If you do not receive an award letter by the middle of April, you should contact the college’s financial aid office. If you have any corrections or edits to make to your FAFSA, they must be submitted before May 15, 2015. SCHOLARSHIPS Updated scholarships are posted to this newsletter and the website. Look once a week for updates. The scholarships listed are available through the guidance office and/or online. To be considered for a scholarship sponsored by a college or university, it is best to apply for admission to that college or university ASAP. Scholarship paper applications are available in the guidance office, unless there is a web address listed. Scholarships are on a separate attachment. Questa Education Foundation (Questa Scholars Program) Forgivable, low-interest loans available for moderate to middle income individuals and families that assists in filling the financial gap for education. Scholars may borrow up to $20,000 for college over four years. Questa’s 50% forgiveness is dependent upon completion of the degree as well as continuing to live and work in one of the 11 counties of Northeast Indiana for 5 years after college graduation. The site then matches students with specific schools on this list, based on the preferences they indicate on topics such as distance from home, academic interests, and their financial situation. The site lists both two- and four-year institutions, as well as trade schools and career education options, with more than 6,000 schools included in its database. Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It is important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth. Then, they would be examined for mental, physical and moral fitness by the military before being deferred or exempted from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces. There are three ways to register: Log on to http://www.sss.gov Register on the FAFSA form when filling it out Register at your local post office NCAA Clearinghouse: If you have plans to play Division I or Division II athletics next year in college, please make sure you have registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse (http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/). They offer an official SAT Question of the Day, an SAT study plan, sample practice questions, and a free practice test which reports your scores back to you immediately. Apps for your phone/tablet: o SAT Up: SAT Up integrates social media elements into the study experience. By completing banks of questions, users can earn achievement badges such as "See the Light," awarded for 10 correct responses, and allow SAT Up to predict SAT scores. o ACTStudent: This is the official app for ACT test takers, and is available for iOS users. Students can use this app to register for tests, view past scores and practice four of the five sections on the exam. Like ACT Question of the Day, ACTStudent explains the reasoning behind the correct answer, as well as how to reach it. While the app includes science questions – a rarity in the app world – it does not offer practice for the writing section of the exam.
