August 2010
Barn Rules and Regulations for 2010-2011
The Lewisville I.S.D. maintains the Chester Boyd Project Center located on Fish Hatchery Road.
This center provides for those students who do not have facilities at home to keep their projects. This
is an LISD facility; all school rules and policies are in effect and shall be enforced.
This facility is open and available for housing swine, sheep, goats and cattle. A feeder animal project
can be kept only for a period of one (1) school year at the facility. No male animals capable of
reproduction will be allowed at the facility. Female animals capable of breeding may stay at the
LISD facility providing they are eligible to show.
The following rules are currently in force. Any new rules that may become necessary will be
effective immediately upon notification of the Agriscience students by the Agriscience teachers.
These rules are to be followed by the students and the parents!!
1. All projects to be kept at the facility must be approved by the student’s Agriscience
teacher. The number of animals a student may raise at the facility is limited to the
available space. The teacher will assign a stall or pen where the project animal will be
kept. High school students that will be enrolled in the Agriscience program during the
fall or spring semester shall be given priority for a pen assignment. In the event that
more requests for stalls or pens have been made than spaces available, the pens may
be assigned based on the written plan established by each Agriscience program.
2. Students must meet the requirements of UIL eligibility in all classes to be permitted
to show his/her animal at any show.
3. Each student is responsible for the feeding and caring of his/her project on his/her
own time and not during school time. Raising a project animal is to be a learning
experience for the student. The student showing the project is to be the primary care
provider for the animal.
4. Each project must be cared for in a proper manner (i.e., daily and sufficient feeding
and watering). In the event an animal is not fed or watered while at the facility, the
student will be required to pay for all feed and other incidental items used for the
animal’s care during the time of neglect. A student’s animal may be removed from
the facility after the third documented incident of neglect.
5. Students will be responsible for keeping their individual project stall or pen clean at
all times. In addition, it is the individual student’s responsibility to keep his/her
animal in the assigned pen.
6. There will be no driving over 10 mph on the road leading to and from the facility.
7. Persons responsible for intentional damage/vandalism (to the property or equipment)
may be held financially responsible for repair of the damage and may have their
project removed from the barn. No one is to touch the fan or the controls to the fan
without prior permission from the Agriscience teacher.
8. Any visitor taken to the facility is the sole responsibility of the Agriscience student
accompanying the visitor.
9. Feed rooms, store rooms, wash rack, walkways, common areas and facility grounds
will be kept clean by the students using the facility. A dumpster is located at the
entrance to the facility for trash disposal.
10. Due to limited storage space, each student will be allotted a designated space for feed
and tack storage. Each student showing must comply with the allotted space or they
will lose storage privileges at eh barn. Pig and goat exhibitors may have 1 barrel or
teacher approved box to store tack and feed. Cattle exhibitors must keep all feed and
tack storage in the marked spaces in the feed room. There will also be no round hay
bales allowed at the barn.
11. No structural additions or changes will be allowed without prior approval by an
Agriscience teacher.
12. The Chester Boyd Agricultural Center is an educational facility for L.I.S.D
13. The abuse of any animal will not be tolerated.
14. State law prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages, use of narcotic drugs or controlled
substances, use of tobacco products, and the use of profane or abusive language at
any school facility. In addition, all school policies will be in effect and enforced at the
Agriscience facility.
15. Insurance for animals kept at the facility is not maintained by the school district,
Agriscience Departments, or FFA Chapters. The loss of animals will not be the
responsibility of the school district, Agriscience Departments, or FFA Chapters.
16. Only parents and students with projects currently at the barn will have access to the
barn through keyless entry cards. If lost, the cost is $35 for replacement and must be
immediately be reported to the Agriscience teacher. Once your animal has been sold
or left the facility, you must return your keyless card to the Agriscience teacher
immediately. All pens and storage areas must be cleaned to original state and
approved by the Agriscience teacher.
17. Due to safety concerns, the project center will be open between the hours of 6 a.m.
and 12 a.m. Anyone present during closed hours will be considered trespassing. It is
also highly recommended that no individual (student, parent, or teacher) be at the
barn alone after dark. If you must be at the facility after dark, please take someone
with you.
18. The Agriscience teachers for each program may create rules in addition to these rules
specific to their programs. Additional rules are to be approved by the campus
principal for that particular program.
19. If the student is ineligible the third nine weeks and fails to regain eligibility by March
5th, the student’s animal(s) will be taken to the Gainesville Livestock Commission
and sold in the student’s name for market value on March 8th.
20. All market animals must be sold or floored at Denton County Livestock Show and
Sale. Heifers in their second year shall be required to be removed from the barn
within 10 days after the day of the Denton County Sale.
21. All students must maintain up-to-date feed logs on a daily basis. The feed log must
include the following information: amount of feed/feedstuff, amount of supplements,
wormer, and any other medications. Anything given to animals during student’s
ownership must be approved by Ag Science Teacher or Veterinarian.
