CONDITION LOCKDOWN
CONTACT THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE IF YOU HAVE TO GO INTO
LOCKDOWN MODE. ASSISTANCE WILL BE PROVIDED.
A. Examples of situations where “Condition Lockdown” protocol may be initiated:
weapons on campus, bomb threats, fights that involve numerous individuals, weapons, or
are gang-related, a major crime or police chase near the school, and civil disturbance that
pose a threat to students and staff.
B. The principal (or his/her designee) will inform all school staff that Condition
Lockdown is being implemented by use of the intercom. Measures should be taken to
ensure that personnel in the outlying buildings or areas without intercom/phone/radio
capability are notified in person. Students in gyms should report to the nearest gym
classroom or locker room, lock the door, and await further instructions.
Students in classes outside the building should report to a pre-determined location and
await further directions. This may or may not be a location on the school campus.
Schools should provide school radios for staff to use when supervising students
outside for any reason.
C. All students shall be kept in the classroom with the door locked during each class
period while the condition is in effect. Staff should not open classroom doors to “see
what is going on.”
D. If students are not in class at the time the lockdown is announced they should proceed
to their assigned class. If a student is a great distance from their classroom (example- not
on the same hallway), he or she should go into the nearest classroom. Teachers will lock
and shut their classroom doors once the hallways near their rooms are clear of students.
If teachers observe imminent danger near their room, they should immediately secure
their room and notify the main office of the danger via the intercom system or classroom
phone.
E. During the lockdown, teachers should move students to a point in the room that is
not visible through the interior hall door and window and have students remain
silent. If the principal (or his/her designee) determines that the threat is on the outside of
the school, he/she will notify teachers to move students away from the exterior windows.
Teachers will ensure that all exterior windows are locked.
F. EMERGENCY GREEN/RED CARDS - As soon as a teacher has the door locked and
the students moved to the appropriate location, he/she will complete the emergency
green/red cards. If there is no emergency in your room you will use the green cards. If
there is an emergency in your room place the red cards in the hall and on the window - no
need to write numbers. That will alert authorities to direct aid to your room immediately.
The red and green emergency cards should be placed in a folder or tray, or taped
near the door so they are immediately accessible when needed.
G. WHAT TO WRITE ON THE EMERGENCY CARDS –
Step 1 – Write your room number legibly on the card.
Step 2 – Write the number of students missing from or added to your class on the
card. Example: If one student left class before the lockdown began and did not
return you would write “-1”. If you added two students not assigned to your class
from the hall way as the lockdown began you would write “+2” on the card.
If all students who began class are still in class you would not write a number on
the card.
H. WHERE TO PLACE THE CARDS - One card should be taped to an outside window
so it can be read from outside. The other card should be slid under your locked door into
the hallway.
I. Students will not be allowed to leave classrooms unless the teacher obtains
authorization from the main office.
J. Teachers should brief students that the school as been placed on a lockdown as a
precaution. Students should be given instructions as appropriate as to what they should
do during a lockdown. School staff not assigned to classroom duties should also shut and
lock their doors. They should also report any suspicious activity to the main office
immediately.
K. The situation may necessitate that all personnel and activities outside the building
should be moved to an indoor, secured area unless otherwise instructed by the building
administrator. The principal (or his/her designee) may give the command for individual
classrooms to evacuate through an exterior window (if possible).
L. While a lockdown is in effect, teachers should only open classroom doors for school
staff members for any reason. Police and school staff will access the room using keys
should entrance become necessary.
CONDITION EXTERNAL
LOCKDOWN
CONTACT THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE IF YOU HAVE TO GO INTO
LOCKDOWN MODE. ASSISTANCE WILL BE PROVIDED.
A. “Condition External Lockdown” protocol may occur more often that the standard
lockdown procedure. This may be initiated when criminal activity or a civil disturbance
has taken place in the vicinity of the school which may pose a remote threat to students
and staff. It is a proactive step by school authorities to alert staff and students to take
extra precautions to keep possible intruders out of the building.
B. The principal (or his/her designee) will inform all school staff that Condition External
Lockdown is being implemented by use of the intercom. Measures should be taken to
ensure that personnel in the outlying buildings or areas without intercom/phone/radio
capability are notified in person by school personnel.
C. Use the school intercom to:
1. Brief students that the school as been placed on exterior lockdown as a
precaution.
2. Give instructions as appropriate as to what they should do during the exterior
lockdown. If the school intercom is incapacitated, “condition external lockdown”
will be communicated by using bullhorns or other measures and teachers are
expected to communicate the protocol to students.
3. Remind all staff, and students who drive to school, to inspect the back seats of
vehicles before entering the vehicle to leave campus during this condition.
D. Staff should be assigned to verify throughout the day that exterior doors are locked as
a general safety guideline. These should also be checked immediately by staff at the onset
of “condition exterior lockdown.” All exterior parking areas and parking lot gates should
also be checked to make sure they are locked.
E. Staff not in direct supervision of students should periodically inspect all exterior doors,
the exterior of the campus, and parking lots from positions inside the school for any
suspicious behavior.
F. Classroom doors should remain locked during each class period while the condition is
in effect. Classroom activities inside the school may continue as usual. Students should
not be allowed to leave the classroom unless supervised by a staff member. Class trips for
bathroom breaks or class changes supervised by staff may continue as usual.
G. Classes in buildings outside the main building should be locked and no one should be
allowed in unless visually identifying them through a window. If at all possible, windows
should be covered in these classrooms during such conditions. Students in these areas
may still come and go into the main building with the following provisions:
1. The teacher visually inspects the area to the main building before bringing
students to the building. Students and staff should proceed quickly to the
building. Teachers should lock the door behind them.
2. Staff should have a key or means to enter the main building before exiting the
classroom.
3. Staff should visually inspect the area to the external classroom before going to
the classroom.
4. Students should not be allowed to come and go from the exterior buildings
without direct supervision by school staff.
H. School staff with a radio should be assigned to monitor staff or high school students
who have need to leave campus during condition external lockdown. Make sure the staff
member/student enters his/her car safely and departs safely from campus.
