Exercise Prescription for the Patient with Cervical Dysfunction March 6th and 7th 2010 at Elborn College (London, Ontario) Presented by: Carol Kennedy BScPT, FCAMT The use of exercise as an adjunct to manual therapy treatment has been a major emphasis of physiotherapy in recent years. It can be a challenge to develop the appropriate exercise program for the patient with cervical dysfunction, attempting to address the many factors involved, and yet not to overload or irritate the neck. This course will focus on the use of exercise in the treatment of the patient with cervical spine dysfunction. A variety of physiological impairments will be identified and the assessment techniques required to evaluate these will be taught through practical sessions. Exercises to address these impairments will be discussed, demonstrated and practiced. These will include impairments of: Muscle performance Dynamic stability Hypomobility Articular Myofascial Posture Somatosensory function Practice in designing exercise programs will be done, through the use of case histories of patients with a variety of impairments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Biography Carol graduated from Queen’s University in 1979, and completed her Advanced Diploma of Orthopaedic and Manipulative Therapy in 1984. She is currently enrolled in the Clinical Masters Program at UWO. She has taught extensively in the Canadian Manual Therapy Course System, as well as internationally. She is a Chief Examiner for the National Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Exams. In 2005 Carol received an Award of Excellence in the Clinical Contribution category from the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia for her work and teaching in the area of the cervical spine. Carol has contributed a chapter on cervical exercise for a textbook by Hall and Brody; Therapeutic Exercise, Moving Toward Function and another for the textbook by Fernandez and Huijbregts; Neck and Arm Pain (in press). Carol is a partner at Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic in Vancouver where she almost exclusively treats patients with cervical spine disorders.
