VOLUNTEER POLICE CADET
CODE OF CONDUCT
1. Honesty and integrity
It is of utmost importance that the public has faith in the honesty and integrity of the police.
Volunteer Police Cadets should be open and truthful in their dealings; avoid being
improperly connected to any person or institution; and demonstrate their commitment to
honesty and integrity.
2. Fairness and impartiality
Volunteer Police Cadets have a responsibility to act with fairness and impartiality in all their
dealings with the public and their colleagues and will not unfairly discriminate against
others.
3. Politeness and tolerance
Volunteer Police Cadets should treat members of the public and colleagues with courtesy
and respect, avoiding abusive or insulting attitudes or behaviour. In particular, they must
avoid: favouritism of an individual or group; all forms of harassment, victimisation or
unreasonable discrimination; and overbearing conduct to a colleague.
4. Abuse of authority
Volunteer Police Cadets must not abuse their association or position with the police
service.
5. Performance of Service
Volunteer Police Cadets should be conscientious and diligent in the performance of their
voluntary service. They should report for voluntary service promptly.
6. Lawful Behaviour
The police service is a disciplined body. Volunteer Police Cadets must abide by the law
applicable to the police. They should support officers and staff in the execution of their
lawful duties, and challenge any improper behaviour, reporting it to a Cadet leader.
7. Confidentiality
Information which comes into the possession of Volunteer Police Cadets through their
service with the police will be treated as confidential. It should not be used for personal
benefit and nor should it be divulged to other parties except where express permission has
been given by a Cadet leader. Similarly, Volunteer Police Cadets should treat, as
confidential, information about Force policy and operations.

8. Criminal offences
Volunteer Police Cadets must report any proceedings for a criminal offence taken against
them. Conviction for a criminal offence or the administration of a caution may result in
voluntary service being suspended or terminated.
9. Property
Volunteer Police Cadets must exercise reasonable care to prevent loss or damage to
property.
10. Fitness for Duty
Volunteer Police Cadets must not make themselves unfit for duty as a result of drinking
alcohol or taking any drug, whether that be prescribed or illegal.
11. Appearance
Volunteer Police Cadets should always be well turned out, clean and tidy. You should not
have tattoos that could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues and/or invite
provocation.
12. General conduct
When performing their service Volunteer Police Cadets should not behave in a way which
is likely to bring discredit upon Nottinghamshire Police. At any other time, they should not
use the fact of their association with Nottinghamshire Police to behave in a way likely to
bring discredit on the Force. This includes all communications involving social networking
sites.
