More Ideas: http://www.mathcats.com/grownupcats/ideabankplacevalue.html Rounding Activities: The number line is the most powerful tool for teaching rounding but that becomes difficult with 100’s and 1000’s. But the Enchanted Learning site has a series of number lines for teaching rounding in the larger numbers. Here is the link http://www.enchantedlearning.com/math/rounding/ It requires a $20 subscription to become subscriber of Enchanted Learning, but is great resources. What’s Your Number Name ________________ Each person in groups of three takes a turn a rolling the die. The students decide where to put this number in their four digit number to make either the largest number. Don’t let your partners see the number you are making. There will be five rolls per number. You may choose to throw one of the numbers in the trash. That is the chance you can take. Then write all the numbers made on the whiteboard to compare. Which is largest? Then place them in order largest to smallest. The largest number gets 5 points, middle number gets 3 points and the smallest gets one point. Total your points after ten rounds to determine the winner. Now do the game trying to get the smallest number. What strategies did you learn from the largest number to help you with the smallest number. This time smallest number gets 5 points, middle 3 points and largest 1 point. ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ ______ points ______ ______ _____ _____ Trash _____ _______ Total Points In Your Journal: What strategies did you use when determining where to place the numbers?
