Most titles are first modern editions; many are technically easy and suitable for amateurs, students, and school pupils. Of special interest for young players are the violin sonata by Clerk of Penicuik, Corelli’s Scottish pupil (Grade 4-5); the Sonata of Scots Tunes by Oswald – five popular tunes arranged as a Baroque suite (Grade 4-5); and the Sonata in G by McGibbon (Grade 5), which can be played either as a trio sonata or by a full band. For more advanced players, the quartets by the Earl of Kelly (A major, B flat major, C minor) are recommended; these were discovered recently in a manuscript from Kilravock Castle, Inverness-shire. Besides native Scots, the series features three composers who were incomers to Edinburgh – Schetky (German), Barsanti (Italian), and Mahon (English). All three settled in the city and made it their home: Mahon’s clarinet concerto introduces Scots airs in its slow movement.
