In addition, the library has standing orders for 9 titles in the Annual Review series, a prestigious annual series devoted to specialized areas of the biological sciences. The following sources were checked against the library's periodical holdings: Title Biological and Agricultural Index General Science Index Magazines for Libraries (8th edition) Held Listed % 83 271 30.6 121 175 69.1 51 111 45.9 *NOTE: Titles held include full-text titles available in IAC SearchBank and EBSCOHost. For additional data on the library's periodical holdings in the biological sciences, see the attached detailed checklists for Using the Biological Sciences and other bibliographies. NONPRINT MEDIA ASSESSMENT The Biological Sciences collection contains 120 audiovisual titles, or .015% of total AV holdings. The AV collection includes items such as videos, filmstrips, kits, and audiotapes. 119 of these titles are in the QH classification (Biology), with 1 title in QL (Zoology). In addition to the holdings in AV, there are 11 CD-ROM titles in the QH, QK, and QL subject areas. SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT Holdings in the related subject collections of Agriculture, Chemistry, Education, Geography and Anthropology, Geology, Medicine, and Psychology provide additional support to the Biology Collection. 2 ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC RESOURCES The library provides the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts Biological Sciences database, which offers abstracts and citations for research in various areas of the biological sciences, including biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology, and ecology. The Biological Sciences database is a compilations of several print indexes, including Animal Behavior Abstracts, Ecology Abstracts, Entomology Abstracts, Genetics Abstracts, Immunology Abstracts, Virology and AIDS Abstracts, and others. Citations and abstracts of literature from over 6000 sources are accessible; sources include serials, conference proceedings, technical reports, monographs and selected books and patents. This database is available via the Internet to students and faculty in the library, on campus, or at home (to registered users). The library also provides access to AGRICOLA, a bibliographic database provided by the National Agricultural Library. Its coverage of agriculture and allied disciplines often encompasses topics relevant to biology, including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, soil and water resources, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural products, alternative farming practices, and food and nutrition. Access to MEDLINE via PubMed is available through the library's home page as well. Basic science and biology coverage is available in the library's general periodicals databases, IAC SearchBank and EBSCOHost. In addition to providing access to electronic databases such as CSA Biological Sciences, the library also maintains subject lists of Internet sites which have been reviewed and evaluated by subject specialist librarians. These lists of subject sites are available through the library's home page, and are readily accessible to anyone with Internet access. Subject areas which support the library's holdings in Biological Sciences are Biology, Botany, Zoology, Environment, and Medicine. Each of these areas lists a variety of sites relevant to these topics; many of the sites are meta-sites or directories to other sites of interest. The library also provides links to Internet subject directories such as Argus Clearinghouse and InfoMine. Printouts of sites currently listed under Biology, Botany, Zoology, Environment, and Medicine are attached. SUMMARY A. HOLDINGS STRENGTHS Overall, the biological sciences collection is fairly strong, as is the library's acquisitions rate for new materials in the field. Data from Blackwell North America, the library's book vendor, indicate that the company shipped 706 new titles in the biological sciences to their customers in 1998. This number excludes popular and lower undergraduate textbooks. During the same time period, the library added 353 titles to the biological sciences collection. Although Blackwell's exclusion of lower undergraduate texts and popular works from its data means that considerably more than 706 new biology titles were available, it should be noted that many of these available titles were out of scope or overly specialized for the library's collection. Therefore, the number of biology books acquired by the library indicates a healthy acquisitions rate when compared to the number of available biology titles. 3 The collection also has several areas with particularly strong holdings. These include natural history, ecology, and botany. In addition, the zoology collection in general is well-developed, and has particular strength in the areas of ornithology, invertebrates, and animal behavior. WEAKNESSES Although there are relative areas of strength in the collection, it should be emphasized that, according to WLN guidelines, a collection rated 3aE (Basic Study or Instructional Support Level; predominantly English) is sufficient to support the needs of undergraduates, but not those of master's degree programs. The 3aE rating of the biological sciences collection indicates that it meets the curriculum needs of its undergraduates, as well as those of students beginning graduate study. Without increased funding, however, the present collection cannot adequately meet the needs imposed by its master's degree students. An additional weakness is the need for weeding and updating in much of the biology collection. A total of 292 biology titles were weeded during the 1998-99 academic year, but a great deal of outdated and superceded material remains in areas such as microscopy, reproduction, cytology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology. The entire microbiology collection (bacteriology, immunology, and virology) needs further development and increased funding. Other areas of weakness noted in the checklists should be systematically addressed as funds permit. RECOMMENDATIONS Library personnel should continue to work closely with biology faculty to identify and purchase the most appropriate materials for the curricula and research needs of students and instructors. As the costs of science and technology materials of all kinds continue to increase, the library and biology faculty should work together to ensure an ongoing funding commitment to the quality of the biological sciences collection. B. PERIODICALS STRENGTHS The library has over eighty current subscriptions to periodicals of interest to this field, including a strong collection of general science and biology titles such as Nature, Science, and BioScience. The collection also boasts a variety of specialized titles, including journals such as Ecology, Animal Behavior, and Journal of Bacteriology. On the whole, the collection is adequate to support the undergraduate curriculum and portions of the graduate curriculum. WEAKNESSES The strength of the periodicals collection in the biological sciences is an ongoing concern. The biology department has increased its emphasis on research, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, in the past several years. During the same period, journal prices in the sciences have skyrocketed, forcing the library to cancel less essential titles in an effort to maintain the quality of the collection. The biology department's increasing demand for journal literature has been partially stemmed by the provision of interlibrary loan services to biology undergraduates, in addition to the ILL service normally provided to graduate students in biology. However, increased spending on both monographs and journals has proven necessary. In fiscal year 1996- 4 97, the library spent ????? on biology journals; ????? in 1997-98, and ???? in 198-99. Increases in subsequent years, due to rising journal prices and increasing user demand, are to be expected. In an effort to make the most of limited funding, the library has worked closely with the biology department in the past year and a half to identify and prioritize periodical titles for cancellation and acquisition. Based on the recommendations of faculty, several less essential journals have been cancelled, while other titles, such as Cell, have been added. Although the library has an adequate collection of core science and biology periodicals, rapid advancements in the field make it impossible to keep up with the growing number of specialized journals in this area. While the publication of all types of scientific literature has exploded within the last decade, biology is one of the fastest growing disciplines in terms of new journal publications. Unless the university makes a firm and ongoing budgetary commitment to maintaining the quality of the biology collection, there will be no way to meet the rising costs of journal literature in the biological sciences. RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that increasing funding be made available for the maintenance and growth of the periodicals collection. Library personnel should continue to consult with biology faculty to ensure that the biology periodicals purchased are those which best support the curricula and research interests of the biology department. C. NONPRINT MEDIA RECOMMENDATIONS The audio-visual holdings in the biological sciences are extremely limited. Limited library funding leaves little room for building the AV collection, especially given the library's increasing commitment to research materials in the biological sciences. Input from biology faculty should be sought to ensure that the audio-visual titles purchased in this area strongly support the curriculum. D. ELECTRONIC RESOURCES STRENGTHS The Biological Sciences database from Cambridge Scientific provides convenient access to citations and abstracts from thousands of periodicals, conference proceedings, etc. in biology and related fields. Two general interest databases, IAC SearchBank and EBSCOHost, provide citations and full text coverage of many general science periodicals . These databases are particularly useful for lower undergraduates who have little knowledge of specialized biological fields. Also, the library's subject lists of Internet sites for Biology, Botany, and Zoology are easily accessible from the library's home page and provide links to many authoritative, useful sites in the biological sciences. The subject lists for Medicine and Environment are also frequently of use to students in the biological sciences. WEAKNESSES Although the library's subject list of Internet sites includes several good sites, there are many more sites of interest available on the Internet which have yet to be added to the library's list of subject sites. Also, many students and faculty are not aware that these lists of sites are available. 5 RECOMMENDATIONS Internet sites should continue to be added to the library's list of biology sites on a regular basis. Library personnel should take every opportunity to publicize and promote the subject lists of sites to instructors and students.
