Banning tanning. Why so many states have decided to say no to solariums? And we meet some lifesaving heroes, to get tips on staying safe this summer. The Wire Last week we told you about the whole Indonesia spying scandal. Australia was caught out trying to tap their leader's phones. One week on and not surprisingly things are still pretty frosty between the two countries. Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono took to Twitter to let everyone know how unhappy he was. And on the streets protestors got pretty fired up about it all too. Meanwhile, back in Australia there's been pressure on Tony Abbott to apologise to Indonesia but he's not keen. Instead he says he's sent them a private letter. Old School. *** The West Australian Government is looking at the way it deals with sharks after surfer, Chris Boyd was killed by one on Saturday. Authorities are still trying to catch the shark responsible. Some of the surfers' friends want big sharks culled. But others say that's not the answer. *** And fans celebrated the 50th anniversary of the world's longest running sci-fi series, Dr Who. The Doctor has been played by 12 different actors over the years some of whom appeared in the anniversary episode. 2 million people around Australia tuned in to watch the special which aired worldwide over the weekend. Don’t Panic Reporter: Sarah Larsen INTRO: We've seen lots of natural disasters on BtN over the years. But have you ever wondered how you would react if you were faced with one of those situations? Two families were put to the test and found it's not easy. But in some ways the kids did better than their parents. Here's Sarah. ©ABC 2013 SARAH LARSEN, REPORTER: How would you react in a disaster: a bushfire, a cyclone or a flood? With the help of some cameras, some special effects, and a team of experts the ABC’s science show Catalyst put two brave families to the test. First up, the Matthews: there's Riley, Liam, Marg and Rod. They live in Hornsby Heights near Sydney's north shore. It’s near a national park. And on a catastrophic fire day things could get dangerous. And that's the fake disaster these guys are about to face. NEWS READER: A bushfire has just started near Glenorie near Sydney’s North. With the fire 13 kays away the Matthews are told to prepare their house. After filling up the bath Rob and Liam head for the roof. That's often what we see on TV during bushfires but the Fire Service says it's actually pretty dangerous. They say at this stage the Matthews should be looking online or checking the radio for updates and putting their bushfire plan into action. Up in the northern New South Wales town of Tweed Heads another type of pretend disaster is about to hit. Dale, Elliot, Bridget and Paul are about to see how they'd cope with a serious cyclone. ELLIOT: Oh no. Dale, oh no. Paul. Oh. DALE: We've only got 24 hours to prepare. PAUL: We have to, um, get the water. Elliot, yep. Keeping a clear head when you're under stress isn't easy. Your brain's designed to work differently when you feel fear. You stop focusing on details or listening to instructions. BRIDGET: You guys aren't very good at this. GIRLS: Mum, should we get everything inside. DALE: Well. PAUL: Yeah BRIDGET: Should we get tape and tape the windows or something? PAUL: Windows, excellent. The kids are actually doing better than the adults and that might be because they've spent more time thinking about cyclones. They've done assignments at school so now they can remember what to do. When the family tries to evacuate the kids stop them from making a huge mistake, driving through flood water. MATTHEW: Are you going to go through the water or not? PAUL: No, we'll stay. ©ABC 2013 Meanwhile, in Sydney the fire front is approaching and the Matthews are battling small fires started by embers. LIAM: I can't hear you dad. They're wearing glasses to make things dark just like the smoke would in real life and in earphones they can hear the roar of the fire. Then there's an alarm from inside. With their kitchen on fire the family head into the bathroom, again, not a great idea. In here they're trapped with no way of knowing what's going on in other parts of the house. The Tweed Heads family, now joined by Paul's two daughters, have also bunkered down as the fake storm rages. Then water floods in. PAUL: I'm not sure where, where else to go? NEEHAK: Yeah, are there any places we can go? PAUL: I don't think we can get much higher. And it's too windy to go up on the roof. Oh no it's getting really loud. PAUL: Hooley dooley. Then, at last, the ordeal is over. For both of the families, it's been a wake-up call. Neither of them were really prepared for their disaster and experts reckon most people would be the same. They say it's really important to have a plan and know it well. Everyone in the family should have jobs to do and you should practice them together. That way when fear kicks in and your brain turns to mush your memory and your instincts will guide you in the right direction. We all hope that a disaster never affects us, but being prepared and knowing the risks is the best way to stay safe. Tan Ban Reporter: Natasha Thiele INTRO: Now, last week Queensland became the latest state to say it's going to ban solariums. Research says they can be dangerous particularly for young people. Tash looks into it. NATASHA THIELE, REPORTER: For many years, we've been told brown is best and people have gone to extreme lengths to get that bronzed look. Whether it's baking in the sun or lying in a solarium. Solariums or tanning beds as they're also known are a quick and easy way to tan all year round. They work by giving off UV radiation. That's a type of energy made naturally by the sun. And it's what gives you a tan making your cells produce stuff called melanin, which makes your skin browner. But it can also travel deeper and damage skin cells. And that can cause a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Tanning beds give you a dose of UV rays six times stronger than the summer sun so they can be pretty dangerous. Experts reckon if you use a sunbed and you're under 35, you have a 59 per cent greater risk of getting skin cancer. ©ABC 2013 A few years ago strict rules came in. People under 18 are no longer allowed to use solariums. The same goes for with anyone with very fair skin. And there needs to be a 48 hour gap between each session. Now, things are getting even tougher. From the start of 2015, people won't be able to pay to use a solarium in most states of Australia. Queensland is the latest to jump on board. But some people think banning solariums won't stop people from using them. Merv owns a tanning shop in South Australia. Around 200 people use his solariums every week. REPORTER: So with the ban coming in, how's that going to affect the industry and yourself? MERV, SOLARIUM BUSINESS OWNER: Well a lot of stores are actually going to have to close their doors because it's their core business. REPORTER: And what are you going to do with the machines after? MERV: We've had a lot of enquiries. People want to buy them off of us and use them at home. We did a survey and 80 percent of the people who answered the survey said that they were either going to go in with someone to buy a solarium bed or import their own solarium beds from overseas because they're quite cheap for under two-thousand you can import your own solarium bed. If anything, it's going to be worse because it's unregulated. They can tan everyday for as long as they like, even children if it's unsecured. Some people reckon the best solution would be to teach kids that having a tan isn't that important and that we can be beautiful no matter what colour our skin is. So what do you think? STUDENT 1: We get kind of drilled with this image in the media that Australians are kind of tanned and you know, go to the beach all the time, Barbies and everything else. STUDENT 2: Yeah like a lot of my friends stress out about being pale and not being tanned enough for summer and stuff. STUDENT 3: It's really big with guys as well like every guy wants to be tanned. STUDENT 4: And body builders have to have dark skin. STUDENT 5: If people really want to be tanned, the ban won't stop them. STUDENT 2: They'll find a way, like there's a lot more ways than just a solarium. STUDENT 1: I think it's important just to be comfortable with who you are and not really feel the pressure to be tanned and everything. But did you know that there are a whole load of secret highways not for cars but for cows. They're called stock routes. NATHAN BAZLEY, REPORTER: Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's an iconic Aussie landmark and also a very busy highway. But did you know that if you give notice, you are legally allowed to herd livestock across it, between the hours of midnight and dawn? The reason is that the Sydney Harbour Bridge is part of a network of livestock highways that stretch hundreds of thousands of kilometres around Australia. You've probably driven on some of them before without even realising it. They're called travelling stock routes. Many many years ago, stock routes were the lifeblood of the livestock industry. Because, think about it before huge trucks how do you think they transported cattle and sheep around the country? They couldn't. Livestock had to transport themselves. Drovers had the job of guiding livestock on massive walks, often thousands of kilometres from the farm to saleyards or abattoirs. Trips could take many months and were slow going. They were also incredibly dangerous. Stock routes can wind through some of the most isolated and barren areas of the country. And many cattle, sheep and even some drovers have died whilst attempting them.These days, stock routes still exist. If you've ever driven down a country road and noticed a big gap between the road and the fences on each side, then it's a good chance that road is also a stock route. But they're hardly used for livestock transport anymore. Big road trains have taken their place, transporting livestock quickly over huge distances instead. But that doesn't mean they're not used at all. The task: Transport 18,000 cattle over 2000ks. The route: from Queensland to New South Wales via stock routes. Expected time of journey: 6 months. This epic challenge is bringing back the days of the stock route. BILL LITTLE, HEAD DROVER: Yes, the actual whole consignment's the biggest we've ever done. Bill is the man heading it up, along with his partner Alonna and their two kids. ©ABC 2013 BILL: Yes, it's a good life for kids. They learn the dangers of life and the danger of the bush, they learn how to track, where the sun comes up, where it goes down, how to light a fire, all the basic things in life. Basic knowledge for drovers, of course. But without that knowledge, huge cattle treks like this could never happen. Well knowledge, and lots of other animals. ALONNA LAING, BILL'S PARTNER: We've got 24 dogs and 11 puppies and I think we've got about 20, maybe 25 horses, so - and one stallion. But none of this answers the question. why not just use trucks like everyone else? Well the man who bought these cattle found it cost the same via truck or via the stock routes. But there are some benefits to the old method. His cattle get food along the way, and it gives him 6 months of travel time to grow more feed for them at home. It made sense, so Bill and his family were hired and the rest will be history. Using stock routes might be the old way and might be the slow way, but this epic trek is proving that doesn't mean it's the wrong way. Quiz 2 Alright let's go to another quiz. Here's the question. But what we don't hear much about is the long journey they took. You're about to hear the story about a young guy who escaped a country at war. Here's Tash. NATASHA THIELE, REPORTER: He has a couple of uni degrees, a loving family, a girlfriend and some tall genes. Life's pretty sweet for Johnson Maker. But life hasn't always been this good. Johnson comes from Sudan, a country in North Africa. For many years, there was a lot of fighting there. ©ABC 2013 JOHNSON MAKER-ADENG: I was just living a happy life, being a kid. I go in cattle camps and come home to mum. Unfortunately, just things went bad, see, and all the villages got attacked. During the attack his dad was killed. JOHNSON: So, yeah, it was a bit hard at that moment. Johnson was 4 when he and his family had to run for their lives. For four years they trekked through the African wilderness, looking for a better and safer place to live. But it was tough. They would go without food and water for days. Some people didn't make it, but they pushed on. When Johnson was 8, he ended up in Kenya at a camp called Kakuma. It's one of the biggest camps for people who have nowhere to live. BBC NEWS, 1995: Kakuma camp, Northern Kenya, desolate home for 40,000 refugees, half are children. This place was home for 12 years. A lot of people got sick including Johnson. He had malaria, a disease carried by mosquitoes. But with a bit of medicine he survived. The camp was also where he got an education. JOHNSON: It was fascinating because we have to go sit on the rocks there, that was the class under the tree. Eventually he and his family were accepted to come to Australia as refugees. Coming here meant a fresh start to life. STUDENT: Girls, I'm not a chick, I'm a girl. JOHNSON: Oh is that what they call it. STUDENT: Well you're an Australian citizen now, we're actually called Sheilas. JOHNSON: Sheilas? STUDENT: Sheilas. And that meant going to high school. Johnson was a few years older than everyone else in year 10 and super tall. JOHNSON: The school was just all lovely I would say. And the only thing I just is, because I was really tall, like making fun sometimes, because of being tall. A lot of good things have happened since moving to Australia. Johnson and his family have become citizens. He graduated from uni. He's even founded an organisation called CushAid, which donates stuff to schools back in his home country. JOHNSON: We thought if we could bring the school back to the people in the village, then we got a chance even the female can go to schools. ©ABC 2013 Johnson's story is one of hope and inspiration and he's living proof that it's important to not give up on your dreams. The Score First to the cricket and Australia is celebrating after victory in the first Ashes test of the summer. Man of the match went to Mitchell Johnson for ripping through the English batsmen whilst also grabbing some handy runs. But it wasn't all good news, Captain Michael Clarke was fined for sledging English player Jimmy Anderson. Probably should have just let the victory do the talking... *** Moving to soccer and the Matildas have beaten China 2 nil. Both goals came just before half time from Katrina-Lee Gorry and Tameka Butt. *** In League Australia has thrashed Fiji to book its place in the World Cup final. The Roos notched up 64 points to nothing making it their fourth game in a row without a try scored against them. They'll face New Zealand in the final. *** And Aussie F1 driver Mark Webber has retired from racing with second place in his last grand prix. His career spanned 215 races with nine race wins. But he went out on a rebellious note breaking rules to complete his farewell lap without his helmet on. Come on safety first Mark! But well done. Swim Safe Reporter: Peter Ah Sam INTRO: It's almost the summer holidays and of course heaps of you will be heading to the beach for a bit of fun. But it's important to stay safe too. Peter went to meet a group of teenage lifesavers to find out what we need to remember. PETER AH SAM, REPORTER: On a hot summer day like this, heaps of kids go to the beach for a swim. But these girls have something different in mind. They're not here to cool off, these guys are training as surf lifesavers. So I thought I'd ask them how to keep safe on the beach. PETER: Hey I'm Peter. SIOBHAN: Hey I'm Siobhan. BELINDA: Belinda ©ABC 2013 TENILLE: Hey I'm Tenille. We're just setting up for a patrol, would you like to help us carry some stuff down." PETER: Sure let’s go. These guys are just some of the many thousands of volunteer surf lifesavers around Australia. And with more than 600,000 rescues since the group began in 1907, they make a big difference. PETER: So guys, why did you want to become a lifesaver? TENILLE: Well we all went to school together when we were little and we started it as a social thing. And then as we got older, we started doing competitions and training more and passed our SRC and now we're doing patrols. PETER: So do you guys get nervous when you have to patrol out on the beach? SIOBHAN: Not really because there's big groups of us, it's not just us on the beach and there is older people and more experienced people. BELINDA: And they've trained us pretty well. The reason they've to be trained so well is because the beach can be a deadly place to take a dip. More than 50 people die each year in the ocean, most because they choose to swim in an area without patrols. It's these deaths that the Surf Lifesaving Association wants to stop. PETER: What advice would you give to the people swimming at the beach to make your job easier? SIOBHAN: First one to be, is to always swim between the flags, which makes it so much easier if everyone is all in one space. PETER: How important is it to stick to the rules? BELINDA: It's very important. People sometimes, you know think sometimes there's rules out there to be annoying, but when it's at the beach it's so unpredictable. SIOBHAN: Yeah, anything can happen here, like really. So it makes it so much easier for us if everyone follows the rules. But sometimes, things can go wrong even if you're doing the right thing. Rips are a big problem on many Aussie beaches. They are hard to spot and can drag swimmers out really quickly. If you find yourself caught in one you'll need to know how to signal for help. SIOBHAN: Remember to always put your hand straight up in the air when you're in trouble. Don't wave it around like you just don't care, just hold it up. PETER: So have you actually got to save any lives? ©ABC 2013 TENILLE: In the holidays we were all at Belinda's house and we were walking to get pizza and a guy had a seizure. We taught the neighbours who came across what to do and rolled him on his side, then put his arm out, just really what we had learnt by completing our SRC and kept him breathing and we rung the ambulance and kept them on the phone talking them through what we were doing.
